Jesus Demonstrates His Authority

Who Is Jesus? The one who calms the wind and the waves in the storm.
As we continue through the book of Mark Jesus will continue to Demonstrate His Authority no t just over the storm; but over the Demonic powers of Satan ,over disease and also over Death as he raises Jairus Daughter.

5:1 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.

The Applied New Testament Commentary Jesus Calms the Storm (4:35–41)

We must remember as we compare the four Gospels that each writer did not always write a complete account of these events. When we study the four Gospels together, we can obtain a fuller description of what happened.

Luke gospel says that he man was in the tombs for a long time and also that the man wore no clothes and lived like a sub human or like a wild animal.
Luke 8:27–28 “When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.””
We also read that the man lived among the tombs .
Jewish people considered tombs unclean and a popular haunt for Demons.
Leviticus 21:1–5And the Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, No one shall make himself unclean for the dead among his people, except for his closest relatives, his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother, or his virgin sister (who is near to him because she has had no husband; for her he may make himself unclean). He shall not make himself unclean as a husband among his people and so profane himself. They shall not make bald patches on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts on their body.”
This verse forbid a priest or a son of Aaron from entering a cemetery or being under the same roof(or tree) as a dead body or within 4 amot or 6-8 feet of a grave.

Jesus can bind the strong man ,no one else can bind (mk3:27 ;5:3-4 )

The picture here is of a man who was possessed by Demonic spirit but can also represent our old life and behaviors.
were we not bound in chains by our sins?
Were we not naked ,destitute and cutting or destroying our Lives with out hope.
Ephesians 2:1–4 “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,”
Though this man who was possessed by Demons Jesus loved him, Just like us we were far from God dead in our sins without hope and jesus died for us and has given us a new life , a new start.
2 Corinthians 5:14–17 “For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
How is someone born again or become a new creation:
When someone put their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior ,allowing God Spirit transform our lives bringing us from death to life.
2. Characteristic and impact:
We are given a new identity: we are seen now by God as innocent, without guilt or shame. (give verse).
New Purpose :
We are no longer moved by a selfish life or living , but are moved to a service to God and Jesus Christ. (give verse)
Everything that is part of our old Nature :
Natural pride
Love of sin
Reliance on our works
Especially the supreme love of self and with that self righteousness self promotion and self justification
This has to do with our former conduct of our lives !
Colossians 3:9 “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices”
Ephesians 4:24 “and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
3.A
New Perspective:
We are no longer to look at life through a wordly lens(or after the flesh)but from a perspective of life in the Spirit.
4. Gods initiative:
This transformation is not done by our own efforts, but it is God working in us reconciling people to Himself.
We are a new creation, brought about by Gods power making us new from the inside and impacts all areas of our lives ,empowered by the Spirit and life dedicated to Christ.
John 1:13 “who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
The old life has passed away and we have been made new.

6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him.

7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.”

10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.

11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.”

13 And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.

14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. 17 Then they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.

18 And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” 20 And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.

Jairus Pleads for His Daughter

Mk 5:1-8

5 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.

2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.”
