We’re back in studying the life of Joseph and his brothers from Genesis...
We are looking specifically at the just how big of a deal it was when fellowship was lost...
We are looking at what was lost because of this broken fellowship...
Part 1 - 22 years and 20% of Joseph’s life was lost that they will never get back...
Part 2 - Peace (peace was replaced with envy, guilt and fear - God designed His peace to rule our hearts and mind, but we lose that peace when we have undealt with sin)
Part 3 - Familiarity (language - communication, looks and lineage)
**The Lord is highlighting for us the importance of healthy relationships because of all the things that satan subtilty wants to steal from us when fellowship is broken...
Everything about this story was based on deception...
22 Lying lips are abomination to the Lord:
But they that deal truly are his delight.
1.) The Pattern of Deception
1.) The Pattern of Deception
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. 4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
There was a pattern to this deception and it began with Jacob...
Jacob’s name means: supplanter or deceiver
Genesis 27 details the account of Jacob lying to his father Isaac:
Jacob lied about his identity
18 And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son? 19 And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.
Jacob used the “God argument” to support his lie
20 And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the Lord thy God brought it to me.
Jacob lied directly to his father’s face
21 And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not. 22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. 23 And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau’s hands: so he blessed him. 24 And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.
In the account of Jacob’s lie to Isaac, there was:
A conspiracy (with Rebekah - much like when Joseph’s brothers conspired to kill Joseph)
18 And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. 19 And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh. 20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. 21 And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him. 22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again. 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; 24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. 26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. 28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
A physical disguise (toward Isaac - much like when Joseph’s brothers brought the bloody coat of many colors back to Jacob)
31 And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; 32 And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no. 33 And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. 34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
We tend to put an exponent on what our parents do...
There was an observable pattern that began at Jacob… in all honesty you can trace back to Isaac, and to Abraham as well and all the way back to the garden...
2.) The Purpose of Deception
2.) The Purpose of Deception
7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. 8 But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; 9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? 10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her. 11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within. 12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. 13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth, 14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice: 15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out. 16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home. 17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: 18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out. 19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled. 20 And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.
The purpose was to cover ones self...
23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.
3.) The Unfairness of Deception
3.) The Unfairness of Deception
14 But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house: 15 For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon. 16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head: 17 And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head. 18 And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days: 19 Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee. 20 And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. 21 And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand: 22 But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.
Joseph was forgotten… it was unfair
4.) The Prolonged Efforts of Deception
4.) The Prolonged Efforts of Deception
13 And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.
“one is not”...
22 years later and they are still telling the same lie...
5.) The Precedent of Deception
5.) The Precedent of Deception
6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?
Jacob was lying most of his life...
Now he’s asking his children why they didn’t lie...
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Concluding truths:
When Deception Reigned, Safety was Lost (the physical)
2. When Deception Reigned, Stability was Lost (the mental)
3. When Deception Reigned, Security was Lost (the emotional)
But even though the physical, mental and emotional aspects were stolen, the spiritual didn’t have to be...
Why do we preach that we should be “filled with the Spirit”?
Because a spirit-filled person will be a truth-teller...
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
“You may choose the lie, but you can never choose the consequences.”
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man;
But afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
30 I have chosen the way of truth:
Thy judgments have I laid before me.
