(intro) We will pick back up in our Acts study and we have finished chapter 1 where the beginning of the chapter starts at the ascension of Christ and the angles tell the men to stop staring into the heavens and head back from the Mount of Olives. They were to head to the upper room where they were to wait for the promised gift of the Holy spirit.
Verse 1, its important to understand that the words of Jesus in John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” The day of Pentecost is a day of fulfillment of the divine promise.
Scholars suspect that the “upper room” was possibly a house near the temple and that where large crowds would assemble on feast day.
Verse 2, In the old testament you can see that the manifestation or appearances by God are accompanied with wind. The greek word Pneuma means both wind and Spirit as seen in this instance where the Spirit of God manifest in visible , audible way. Now the “ flames or tongues of fire” in the greek can literally mean the organ tongue or the actual language spoken by the tongue which in this case allowed the believers to speak in inspired languages other than their own. So the disciples spoke in languages that people in the crowd could understand.
in Ephesians 5 Paul writes to the church in Ephesis in verse 18 “ Dont be drunk with wine because that will ruin your life instead, BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT”
It was a command! we are to ask the Holy Spirit to fill us and we believe in all the gifts of the spirit and so we should continually ask God to Fill us with His Holy Spirit so that we may be under the control of the Holy Spirit not our sinful nature. ITs not by our power that we deny ourself and take up our cross but by the power of the Holy Spirit that fills us.
