and glory and a kingdom,

3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. The whole world cannot make up to a man the loss of his soul. The possession of all the treasures that the world contains, would not compensate for eternal ruin. They would not satisfy us, and make us happy while we had them. They could only be enjoyed for a few years, at best, and must then be left for evermore. Of all unprofitable and foolish bargains that man can make, the worst is that of giving up his soul’s salvation for the sake of this present world. It is a bargain of which thousands, like Esau, who sold his birthright for a mess of pottage, have repented,—but many, unhappily, like Esau, have repented too late.

Let these sayings of our Lord sink deep into our hearts. Words are inadequate to express their importance. May we remember them in the hour of temptation, when the soul seems a small and unimportant thing, and the world seems very bright and great. May we remember them in the hour of persecution, when we are tried by the fear of man, and half inclined to forsake Christ. In hours like these, let us call to mind this mighty question of our Lord, and repeat it to ourselves, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

his face was altered. The transfiguration is not an illumination of Jesus from the outside (cf. ) but from the inside. dazzling white (lit., “bright as a flash of lightning”). The transfiguration provides a glimpse of the future glory of the Christ (), the Son of Man, at his second coming (vv. 26–27) when he comes in the cloud of the glory of God. Cf. v. 26; 21:27; ; . It likewise gives a glimpse into the reality that Christ is the transcendent Son of God, sent by the Father for the salvation of his people—i.e., for all who believe in him, both Jews and Gentiles.

Put to death (mortify). What does mortify mean?

mortification

The act of self-denial or the “putting to death” of sinful instincts in order to have freedom from sin and to live in the power of the Holy Spirit. The NT stresses that this act of humiliation comes about through the grace of God. It is the result of, not the condition for, conversion.

So the apostle, (in , says) Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth.” Whom speaks he to? Such as were “risen with Christ,” verse 1; such as were “dead” with him, verse 3; such as whose life Christ was, and who should “appear with him in glory,” verse 4. Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it whilst you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you. Your being dead with Christ virtually, your being quickened with him, will not excuse you from this work.
