Terminal Illness Scriptures
Biblical teaching
A sleep in Christ
18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
Sleep in Christ or asleep in Jesus is a biblical euphemism for the physical death of a believer, highlighting that death is not permanent but a temporary state.
Key aspects
Context, primary used here
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
This scripture assures believers that those who died that were believers will be resurrected at the return of Jesus.
Significance : It emphasizes that a Christian, death is not final, It is treated like a restful state where Christians will be resurrected.
No “Soul Sleep” : This phrase refers to the body’s restful state, not a state of unconsciousness for the soul. It is clear that upon death, a believer’s spirit is conscious and in communion with the Lord.
Hope: It provides hope that the deceased will be reunited with the living believers at the Rapture.
Is Blessed
13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
Is gain
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Is full of faith
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
is full of peace
2 He shall enter into peace: They shall rest in their beds, Each one walking in his uprightness.
is full of hope
32 The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: But the righteous hath hope in his death.
Sometimes desired
29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart In peace, according to thy word:
Waited for
14 If a man die, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait, Till my change come.
Met with resignation
24 And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
14 And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
2 I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;
Met without fear
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
Precious in God’s sight
15 Precious in the sight of the Lord Is the death of his saints.
God preserves them to
14 For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our guide even unto death.
God is with them in
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Removes from coming evil
20 Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
1 The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: And merciful men are taken away, none considering That the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.
Leads to rest
17 There the wicked cease from troubling; And there the weary be at rest.
7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
Leads to comfort
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
Leads to Christ’s presence
8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:
Leads to a crown of life
8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
Leads to a joyful resurrection
19 Thy dead men shall live, Together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: For thy dew is as the dew of herbs, And the earth shall cast out the dead.
2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
Disregarded by the wicked
1 The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: And merciful men are taken away, none considering That the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.
Survivors consoled for
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
The wicked wished theirs to resemble
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, And the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, And let my last end be like his!
