King James Version Chapter 11
Hebrews 11:1
The biblical concept of walking by faith centers on trusting God’s character and promises rather than relying on visible evidence or circumstances. Paul contrasts faith-based living with dependence on sight (2 Cor 5:7), establishing a fundamental tension between what we can perceive and what we must trust. This trust operates at a deeper level than mere intellectual assent—faith functions as the substance of hoped-for realities and the evidence of what remains unseen (Heb 11:1), suggesting that trust itself becomes a form of knowledge and assurance.
The righteous life emerges from this posture of trust. Paul teaches that God’s righteousness unfolds through faith, citing the principle that the just live by faith (Rom 1:17), a conviction rooted in the Old Testament declaration that the righteous person lives through faith (Hab 2:4). This isn’t merely passive belief but an active mode of existence—a way of ordering one’s life around divine promises rather than material evidence. For Paul personally, this meant radical dependence: he describes his crucifixion with Christ and his subsequent life as lived through the faith of Christ himself (Gal 2:20), indicating that faith-based living ultimately means allowing Christ’s faithfulness to sustain and direct us.
Walking by faith, then, involves reorienting perception itself—learning to recognize God’s presence and guidance even when circumstances obscure them, and allowing trust in Christ’s character to become the foundation upon which daily existence is built.
