Are you born agian?

John 3:1–17 NKJV
1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Intro: Everyone is going to stand before the Lord one day and be judged. Some will be welcomed into heaven, a place of eternal joy. A place of peace, a place where we will worship Jesus forever.
Other will be cast into hell, a place of eternal torment.
How gets into heaven? What credentials is God looking for?
He’s not looking Church membership.
He’s looking for how good of a person you are.
He’s not looking to see if you were baptised.
He’s looking to see if you are born again. (Born from above)
You can’t be a Christian if you are not born again.
I’ve heard people say, “I’m a Christian, just not one them born again Christians.
In these verses today, Nicodemus, a very religious man is going to have a conversation with Jesus. He will find out that being born again is the only way to heaven.
Before we get to this, lets look at the last 3 verses of chapter 2
John 2:23–25 NKJV
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
Very early into Jesus ministry. He had already stirred things up with what He had done at the Temple. So this would have turned some against Him.
But He performed miracles, He taught. And this got some people thinking, some even believing, or at least believing to point.
We don’t have details of the miracles. VS 23 many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.
They were seeing something that they had never seen before, and this (the miracles) caused them to believe in His name.
But look what Jesus saw in them.
John 2:24–25 NKJV
24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
The word commit, comes from the same GW as believe.
They believed in Jesus, but He didn’t believe in them.
It was the miracles that made them believe.
It takes more then just believing in miracles.
If someone believes in Jesus when they see a miracle, what happens when they don’t see a miracle.
Think about the so called faith healing preachers ( one that travels) and they are doing all these so called miracles, faith healing, and someone in there and they believe in Jesus because of these miracles.
Then they go to a church one morning and there is no faith healing miracles, will they still believe? Not if it is sallow faith.
John 3:1–2 NKJV
1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Nicodemus was a Pharisees, Nicodemus is very serious about religion.
The Pharisees were very serious about obeying every command that God giving them in the O.T
Judaism teaches that the Old Testament has 613 commandments—248 dos and 365 don’ts.
They were so serious about obeying the law that they added to it.
So Nic was a apart of this group, but what he was in Jesus got him and others thinking, so he comes to Jesus to have a conversation with Him.
Nicodemus is also a powerful leader. He’s called a “ruler of the Jews” Most likely Nicodemus is a member of the Sanhedrin. If you were to combine the United States Senate with the Supreme Court
Nic was teacher of the law, look at vs 10
John 3:10 NKJV
10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?
He was well respected. Elab on this
He knew the law, he was a great teacher. he did his best to obey the law, but there was something missing in his life.
And when he heard Jesus, when he saw the signs (Miracles) he knew there was something about Jesus. And so did some of the others.
2 This man came to Jesus by night
Why at night? Some think fear of someone seeing him.
I think it was because, maybe it was just a better time. A time when Jesus wasn’t as busy and he could have a better one on one talk with Him.
When Jesus spoke, when Jesus performed Miracles there was a big crowd of people, but He would always take time to talk to one on one with someone.
John 3:1–2 NKJV
Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.
He calls Jesus Rabbi (teacher)
we know that You are a teacher come from God
“Jesus was not a teacher that came from God, He was God who came to teach”
Its more then knowing who Jesus is , you have to believe that Jesus is God in order to be born again.
Now Nic did not know that He was God, but he know that He was form God.
Jesus doesn’t try to reason with Nic, or
John 3:3 NKJV
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Nic had religion ,he didn’t need anymore religion, he need to be born again.
There are a lot of religious people. They do a lot of things in the name of their religion.
They live a religious life.
Religion will not get you into heaven, only a relationship with Jesus. The only way to have a relationship with Jesus is to be born again.
Being born again is not a option, it is a requirement.
Jesus looks at Nic and tells him, “you must be born again” that is the only way to heaven.
You not born again by being good.
You are not born again by baptist.
You are not born again by being confirmed.
You are born again by your belief inJesus.
John 3:4 NKJV
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
What Jesus says to Nic, floors him. So he comes back with a question.
Nic knew that he could physically to born again.
I think he was asking, can this really happen?
Being born again is a new start. Its a change
Can I really change.?
Anyone who really wants to be changed, must be born again.
It’s doesn’t matter how old you are, you can be born again.
It’s doesn’t matter what you have done, you can be born again.
John 3:5 NKJV
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Water is not talking about being baptized.
Jesus is telling Nic, I’m not talking about a phyical birth, I’m talking about a spiritual birth.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
John 3:6–8 NKJV
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Elab on the flesh, our sin nature.
Being born again is of the spirit, that is the only way to concur the flesh.
John 3:6–8 NKJV
7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
Amplified Bible Chapter 3

7 Marvel not [do not be surprised, astonished] at My telling you, You must all be born anew ( born from above)

Jesus is telling Nic of spiritual things. Nic was so caught up in religious his that he didn’t understand spiritual things.
Do people need to go to church? Yes. But without being born again church is just a place to go.
John 3:6–8 NKJV
8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Wind is speaking of the spirit.
You can hear the wind, you can see the effects of the wind.
When the spirit moves in someone's life, and they are being conviction, and they need to be born again, and that person does become born again, you will see the effects of it in their life.
John 3:9 NKJV
9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”
How are these things possible?
John 3:10 NKJV
10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?
KJV Art thou a master of Israel
Here it says “the teacher of Isreal”
Jesus is saying, you should know these things
Here is the problem with Nic. He did not get spiritual things .
The only way to have a understanding of spiritual things is to be born again,
John 3:11–13
11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.
Jesus knows Nic heart, He knew his intention are sincere. Jesus knew that the spirit was moving in the life of Nic
The Holy Spirit is still reviling Jesus to people today.
Today, here at Pine Grove the Holy Spirit may be reviling to someone that today is the day that they need to be born again.
Nic had asked. “how can these things be”?
Jesus is now going to give him the answer.
John 3:14–15 NKJV
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
Numbers chapter 21
This is story that because of their sin, God sent snakes into the camp.
God had Moses make a serpent out of brass carved this snake out of brass and I want you to put the snake on a pole and I want you to stand it up in the middle of the camp of the Israelites and anyone who is bitten by the snake who would die if they will just look at that serpent of brass up on that pole they will be healed
This was a picture of Jesus on the cross.
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For God so Loved the world:
That He gave Hs only begotten son:
That whosever believes in Him:
Should not perish:
Bit have everlasting life:
John 3:17 NKJV
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Romans 6:23 NKJV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 10:9–10 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
