WEEK 2 – FEBRUARY 8 (SUPER BOWL SUNDAY)
RIGHT TEAM, RIGHT SPIRIT, RIGHT SIDE UP
“Check out today’s notes on your CHURCH CENTER APP”
“Today is Super Bowl Sunday. And for some people, this is the most exciting day of the year… and for others, it’s the loudest nap day of the year.”
Some folks love football. Some folks love the food. But I believe that were here today, because we love Jesus and you’re just being polite about the football part.”
“But here’s what’s interesting about today, even if you don’t like sports at all, millions of people who don’t agree on anything else will gather today around one thing.”
They’ll wear the same colors. They’ll cheer the same moments. They’ll celebrate together, or suffer together.”
“And nobody will say, ‘Why are all these people in my living room?’ Because today, belonging is the point.”
The world is desperate for what today represents: Connection, Unity, and being part of something bigger than yourself.”
“But here’s the twist…”
“The world gathers for a game that ends tonight.
The church gathers for a kingdom that never ends.”
“Football teams have a season. God’s family has a calling.”
“And in an upside-down world that celebrates individual stats, personal brands, and ‘do-your-own-thing’ living, God still says:
You were never meant to do life alone.
“Today, we’re talking about LIVING RIGHT SIDE UP IN AN UPSIDE-DOWN WORLD — and specifically, what it means to live with the right team, the right spirit, and the right purpose.”
“Because whether you love football or not, everyone here needs a team.
And the good news is — God already picked you.”
Let’s look at one of our Foundation Scripture’s in they series.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV) 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Church Family, Will live differently as we think differently.
Romans 12:2 (NLT) 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
An upside-down world celebrates individual stats, personal brands, and self-promotion.
God calls us to unity, teamwork, and shared victory in Christ.
1: CHRISTIANITY IS NOT A SOLO SPORT.
1 Corinthians 12:12–14 (NKJV) 12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.
Church Family, The world says: “I’ve got this.” God says: “We need each other.”
There are no free agents in the Body of Christ.
Lone believers are vulnerable believers.
Even the greatest quarterback still needs:
A line to protect him
Receivers to catch
Coaches to guide
No one wins alone, not in football, not in faith.
“Some people say, ‘I don’t need church, I worship God on my own.’ That’s like saying, ‘I don’t need a team, I’m just play by myself.
Again remember some scripture’s that we have been looking at.
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 (NKJV) 9 Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. 11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Hebrews 10:25 (NKJV) 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
2: EVERY PLAYER HAS A POSITION AND A PURPOSE
1 Corinthians 12:18–22 (NKJV) 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.
Look at: 1 Corinthians 12:18 (NKJV) 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.
Church Family:
God assigns positions, not spectators.
Not everyone is visible, but everyone is valuable.
The Kingdom doesn’t run on talent alone; it runs on faithfulness.
Think of it:
Offensive linemen don’t get commercials — but without them, nobody scores.
Heaven celebrates faithfulness more than flash.
John Maxwell Said:
“Teamwork makes the dream work, but only when everyone plays their part.”
Romans 12:4–8 (NKJV) 4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
3: UNITY IS STRONGER THAN TALENT
Philippians 1:27 (NKJV) 27 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,
Talent can win games, but unity wins championships.
The enemy doesn’t have to stop the church, all he has to do, is divide it.
Unity doesn’t mean uniformity, it means shared purpose.
You ever noticed that:
Teams stacked with talent often lose to teams with chemistry.
The church is most powerful when we pull in the same direction.
Psalm 133:1 (NKJV) 1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!
4: ENCOURAGEMENT IS OUR LOCKER-ROOM SPEECH
Hebrews 10:24 (AMP) 24 And let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over one another, studying how we may stir up (stimulate and incite) to love and helpful deeds and noble activities,
Encouragement fuels endurance.
People don’t quit because they’re weak, they quit because they’re discouraged.
We’re called to stir, not criticize.
Coaches don’t wait until halftime to encourage — they do it constantly.
The church should be the safest locker room in the world.
Rick Warren: “We are better together.”
Proverbs 12:25 (NLT) 25 Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT) 11 So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.
5: WE WIN AND LOSE TOGETHER
1 Corinthians 12:26 (NKJV) 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
In the church:
We carry burdens
We share victories
We cover weaknesses
When one player is injured, the whole game plan changes.
Love shows up, not just with words, but with presence.
Galatians 6:1–2 (NLT) 1 Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. 2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.
Romans 12:15 (NKJV) 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
6: JESUS IS OUR HEAD COACH:
Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV) 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus:
Called the plays
Took the hits
Secured the victory
Remember This:
We don’t play for victory, we play victory.from
The Super Bowl winner gets the trophy, but Jesus already won the ultimate victory at the cross and He did it for us.
Our job is to stay in the game and trust the Coach.
Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV) 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Look what He did for our Victory.
Colossians 2:15 (NKJV) 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Revelation 1:18 (NKJV) 18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.
And Today:
Romans 8:37 (NKJV) 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
Living right side up in an upside-down world means choosing community over celebrity, unity over ego, and Jesus over self.
But as we look to Him as our True Coach, we are always on the winning team.
