New Wine

Transcript
Tonight, we’re entering into a section in John’s Gospel focused on the theme of “newness.” This section begins in 2:1 and ends in 4:54.
John: Verse by Verse The New Wine and the New Temple (2:1–25)
The theme is the fulfillment of the old ways and old covenant and their replacement by the new covenant and salvation Christ has brought with him. In him we have the new wine, the new temple, the new birth, the living water, and the new worship.
It’s interesting, too, that John begins and ends this section with miracles taking place in Cana. Why is this interesting? Well…look, back, again, at John 1:50-51
Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Who is Jesus talking to? He’s talking to Nathanael…and…Nathanael’s hometown is Cana (John 21:2).
So, this theme of newness begins and ends in the hometown of this guy who Jesus says will see “greater things.” John has already told us that Jesus is doing a “new and greater thing.”
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
So, let’s start walking through this passage…
On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
A) On the third day…
gives us a timeframe—3 days after Jesus’ encounter with Nathanael.
B) A wedding at Cana in Galilee
Weddings typically lasted a week. It was a town-wide celebration…feasts and partying.
C) Mother of Jesus was there
probably family or close friend
Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”
Wine ran out
Embarrassing/Shame
Lawsuits
And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
A) “Woman”
Whoa…is Jesus being disrespectful?
respectful/endearment
B) What does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.
Whoa…is Jesus being a jerk? Is he refusing to help this poor groom?
Two things are happening, here:
Jesus is telling Mary that their relationship has changed. No longer “mother-son.” He is Lord & Master. He is submitting to the Father’s will in everything—not hers. The road to the cross is starting…
This teaches us about prayer.
She lays the need at his feet
She trusts that he’s going to provide
She leaves it with him
Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.
When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
STONE WATER JARS
Jewish law required ceremonial washing before meals.
Stone—less likely to contract uncleanness
“Fill them w/ water”
Servants obey
to the brim…magnitude of the miracle
“Draw some out and take it…”
They took it
WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE?
THE ARRIVAL OF THE KINGDOM
THE ARRIVAL OF THE KINGDOM
“And in that day
the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and the hills shall flow with milk,
and all the streambeds of Judah
shall flow with water;
and a fountain shall come forth from the house of the Lord
and water the Valley of Shittim.
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when the plowman shall overtake the reaper
and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed;
the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and all the hills shall flow with it.
I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel,
and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;
they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine,
and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.

Water—Wine
Water (Jewish washing) could only wash the surface. The wine (blood) washes the heart…REMOVES SIN.

THE FUTURE OF THE KINGDOM
THE FUTURE OF THE KINGDOM
giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,
