Comfort Must Fall!
God’s given us authority and power to literally change the course of our young people’s lives.
Our faith has the power to set them free.
Our pastoral care has the ability to show them love like they’ve never known.
Our discipleship has the authority to help them live in freedom.
The challenge of leadership isn’t persuading people God can work through me, but that God can work through them.
Esther faced the giant of genocide.
She was in a do or die situation.
Her uncle, Mordecai, encouraged her to go to the king and ask for mercy.
Esther 4:10–11 NIV, “Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai, “All the king’s officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be put to death unless the king extends the gold scepter to them and spares their lives. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king.””
The hidden giant she faced, that people were unaware of, was the giant of comfort.
She had the opportunity to be used powerfully by God, but she starts reasoning that she could die so it’s better she didn’t take a risk.
Comfort has every opportunity to keep us safe where we are.
And it has every opportunity to keep us from growing.
Here’s some ways that comfort can become a harmful thing:
If we miss a great opportunity because we choose a safer, easier pathway.
If we choose the good thing but miss the God-thing.
If we slip into thinking it’s “my life” to do with as I please.
If my number one factor in deciding what I do is “whatever makes me happy.”
If we grow accustomed to our sin and fail to confront it and remove it from our lives.
Esther 4:12–14 NIV, “When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?””
Esther was in a test of obedience.
Not to a human king or to Mordecai, but to God.
The gold sceptre was the king’s way of showing favour.
Esther didn’t know whether she would see King Xerxes’ gold sceptre pointed towards her for her to touch.
But what she neglected, in her comfort, is the fact that the King of King’s gold sceptre was pointed towards her.
“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place…”
Our disobience doesn’t stop a move of God, it just eliminates us from taking part.
“…who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?””
You are in a royal position.
You’re a priest — 1 Peter 2:9 NIV, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
You have authority — Luke 10:19 NIV, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
To not disciple is to not live in obedience.
Matthew 28:18–20 “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.””
“Go make disciples of all nations…” This is a call to obedience.
If you’re in doubt whether you can do it, remember the last line, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
I want to be your Mordecai!
Your champion and biggest supporter.
The coach from the sidelines encouraging and coaching you.
