Double Daves
v. 18 Why Does Paul Rejoice?
“Christ is Proclaimed” - The Sharing of the Gospel
Romans 1:15–17 “15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.””
Paul rejoices not about what he has earned rather what he has been given.
PT. 1 Rejoice in the Gift of the Gospel
What does this look like?
1 Samuel 2 Hannah’s Prayer
Isaiah 61:10 “10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.”
Isaiah 61:1 “1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;”
How does Paul Describe the gospel?
1 Timothy 1:13–16 “13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.”
Rejoice in The Grind of the Gospel
Rejoice in The Grind of the Gospel
Pauls future hope does not exempt him from present suffering.
Rather it encourages him through it.
How many of you have sports or band or other types of practice?
Why?
Philippians 1:21–24 “21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. 24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.”
Paul is not saying “I want to die because life is meaningless” Rather he says “I live because life is full of purpose”
Pt. 2 Rejoice in the Grind of the Gospel
Paul is faced with two good plans! Neither are particularly comfortable.
What is your idea of a plan for a good day?
Good ≠ Comfortable… Good ≠ Easy
Good = God being glorified
A relationship with God is free and the ability to glorify him is a BARGIN… no matter the cost!
v. 27 what is the manner of you life worthy of?
Philippians 1:29 “29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,”
It has been granted to you to suffer and suffer well
Romans 5:1–5 “1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Pt. 3 Rejoice again in the Gospel
Philippians 4:4 “4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
We often forget to rejoice…
