Mark 2:1–12 “And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!””
It all started because it was heard that Jesus was at home.
The word spread out.
Done in group.
Opposition did not keep them.
Their love love for their friend was more important for them to simply give up.
They became creative
It was all possible because they shared the same belief.
You want to make a difference? Surround yourself with those who are as committed about the outsiders as you are.

Commentaries

the word spread out that Jesus been in his home. this is a warm and inviting culture, similar to mine growning up. i remember when my uncles would come and visit from florida or ny on their first night the entire neighborhood would be at my grandmas house there would be music, a bunch of new cousins i didnt know i had and they people would come and stay for hours.
Something similar is happening here with Jesus. The word spreads out and the house gets crowded, which preventing access towards Him.
Among the uninvited guest, is a group of four men that is determinate to bring their paralytic friend.
Last night, we mentioned how much in the outside the widower would have been… well, this guy would have been in even worst.
They were on a mission, so they bring him on a mat. Now, here’s something to consider. We are not told what was their starting point. They could have been from Capernaum, or from one of the neighboring towns. They could have carry him for a short distance or for a long time, but what the passage tells us next reveals to us that these four men were determinate to get their outsider of a friend to Jesus.
They had two convictions:
1.His friend desperately needed something.
2. Only Jesus was capable to offer it.
So what do they do?
Like many Palestinian homes back then, this house probably had an outside stairway leading to a flat roof. So, the men went onto the roof. After digging through it, they were able to create an opening big enough above Jesus were they would lowered the paralyzed man before Him.
Could you imagine that scene? Jesus teaching, people laying on the floor, some outside looking through the window. Everyone is wondering was the scratching noise? What are the little pieces of of clay falling? Then there is an opening , and you see 4 man who are going hard at creating a way for their lost friend who stands in the outs to be brought in into the present of Jesus.
No wonder, Jesus responds by being amazed at the kind of evidence of faith these man had display in His power to heal this man.
He did not rebuke them for interrupting, but healed him from even a greatest sickness there is, the sickness of sin.
Then Jesus will use this moment to prove to those in attendance that he was truthfully the Son of Man.
Jesus will not only take care of His greatest physical need, but what was more important, he took care and was quick to care for his greatest need as a human being .
now, here’s two possible things for us to wrestle if it wasn't for their friends:
1. He may have never met Jesus and be healed and more importantly, be forgiven of his sin.
2. God could have used other people to bring him to him. And, if so, what a sad missed opportunity for his friends.
Look, i hope you have been able to catch on on the progression that we have followed over the weekend.
You were created for a belonging that is found only in a relationship with Jesus. That belonging leads to worship, worship shapes spiritual growth, and that growth produces a deep dependence on God—which is why we surrender to Him.
Hebrews 13:15–16 “Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”
