Matthew 5:1-16

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them. He said: 3 “Blessed are the poor beggar in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. 13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

The first 4 beatitudes tell you how to become a christian. (how to be sure) The Last four tell you about the new life we have in Christ.

1.. You can’t come to christ as if he is a self help. (until you see your whole need)

To add to the Gospel is to lose the Gospel.

2.. My Problem is sin. until your mourn, you cant enter the kingdom of God.

you may not have a lot of sins in your life outwardly, but the essence of sin is this claim that we have to run our own lives. I own me! Even though i didnt create me i own me. i have the right to call the shots and live as i see fit and thats what sin is at the root heart level.

3.. Meekness - We turn to God humbly and say i take my hands off my life. Lordship and surrender.

4.. vs 6 What record will open up the door to God? A Hunger after someone else's righteousness not their own.

Jesus is our brother

you spent you whole life rebelling against him. (own life and master)

Your sins caused him to die

he appears before you -

All you need is need! All you need is nothing! (you are aware of your own neediness.)

The Requirements for salvation

The Response to Salvation (A Changed life)

The Result of our response. (A blessing to the world)

( Kingdom people have these things)

being born again is the gateway into the kingdom of God. And what we have in the kingdom is these things.

inheriting the earth

deep soul comfort

being adopted into the family

seeing God face to face! (They shall see God)

Observations

Kingdom people are blessed by God

Kingdom people are set apart by God (8 qualities)

Recipients of grace (salvation)

A Transformed life -

Your relationships will be transformed (mercy)

forgiveness - mercy absorbs the debt - it forgives the debt.

costly giving - you cant bear a burden without getting under it… some of it comes back on you. (i cant afford to allow some of your burden falling on me) Merciful people absorb the debt no matter what the cost but they also meets the need no matter what the cost.

what if half our people did that!? do you know what we would be? We would be a church! Because thats what the church is. you have to go through the first 4 attitudes before you can truly get to the fifth.

The only problem God ever faced is our forgiveness. (creation was easy) (The Cross was Hard.) The costliness of it! what he had to go through. (Totally voluntarily) This will make us merciful.
