25 On that very night the LORD said to him, “Take your father’s young bull and a second bull seven years old. Then tear down the altar of Baal that belongs to your father and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. 26 Build a well-constructed altar to the LORD your God on the top of this rock. Take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down.” 27 So Gideon took 10 of his male servants and did as the LORD had told him. But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city to do it in the daytime, he did it at night.

28 When the men of the city got up in the morning, they found Baal’s altar torn down, the Asherah pole beside it cut down, and the second bull offered up on the altar that had been built. 29 They said to each other, “Who did this?” After they made a thorough investigation, they said, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”

30 Then the men of the city said to Joash, “Bring out your son. He must die, because he tore down Baal’s altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”

31 But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Would you plead Baal’s case for him? Would you save him? Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him plead his own case because someone tore down his altar.” 32 That day, Gideon’s father called him Jerubbaal, saying, “Let Baal plead his case with him,” because he tore down his altar.

Why is it so important that Gideon Destroyed the altar to Baal and Asherah Pole?
What is an Altar to Baal and an Asherah Pole?
Jeremiah 19:5 HCSB
They have built high places to Baal on which to burn their children in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, something I have never commanded or mentioned; I never entertained the thought.

Asherah poles (v. 3) were Canaanite fertility symbols which played an important role in the people’s depraved nature religion. (On the high places see comments on Num. 33:52.) The Asherah poles were probably images of Asherah, Baal’s mother and El’s consort, and may have served as incense stands in Baal worship.

Ashtoreth was the goddess of fertility. Baal worship involved the most debasing immorality imaginable.

The people would sacrifice things that God never intended them to sacrifice
God wanted to deliver them from the oppression
but they were to busy believing things they were never suppose to believe and sacrificing things that were never ment to be sacrificed
How many times have we sacrificed things that we never were suppose to?
Our gods come in different forms then an altar or a Pole
Many of us Have sacrificed to the god of hurts
we continue to give up ourselves
our hurts plague our minds
and they destroy our souls
Some it is the god of value
we continue to give ourselves away for some sort of value
We give it guys/girls
we just want to belong
some of us it the god of addiction
this god demands so much from us
and never lets us go
others its the god of regret
this god never lets us move past our mistakes
this god constantly is flooding our thoughts with our mistakes
Often times saying “you are such a mistake”
And some of us its the God of depression
constantly flooding our emotions with feelings of worthlessness
of feelings of regret
feeling so low
We keep going back to these gods that rule our lives
These our False
they are lies
God wants to deliver you from your oppression
We need to start tearing down the altars that we have sacrificed
our identity on
our future on
our hopes
our peace on
You see there was a sacrifice that was made for you so you wouldn’t have to sacrifice anymore
John 3:14–15 HCSB
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life.
Isaiah 53:4–5 HCSB
Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds.
Gideon tour down the altar to Baal and the asherah pole
then in it place he made a sacrifice to God
He built an altar on top of ruble of the sacrifices that were made in vain
the sacrifices that cost the people their
the altar that brought oppression
Jesus made that same sacrifice
2 Corinthians 5:21 HCSB
He made the One who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
We need to stop being like the guys who didn’t know how to live without the Baals and Asherahs
they were dependent on them
they wanted to return to them and sacrifice because it was all they knew
it was their security
their identity
Hebrews 12:2 HCSB
keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.
Don’t return to the old
God wants to deliver you
stop sacrificing
Its time to tear down the altars that our in our lives
And when we start to go down those roads of sacrificing ourselves to
depression
oppression
false identity
we need to know it is a lie
Revelation 12:9 HCSB
So the great dragon was thrown out—the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world. He was thrown to earth, and his angels with him.
Deceives- to lead astray
James 1:13–18 HCSB
No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God.” For God is not tempted by evil, and He Himself doesn’t tempt anyone. But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death. Don’t be deceived, my dearly loved brothers. Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning. By His own choice, He gave us a new birth by the message of truth so that we would be the firstfruits of His creatures.
When we do fix our eyes on Jesus our story changes
Gideon’s story tells of what God can do in our lives and most importantly through our lives
It teaches us
Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
It teaches us that the weapons of our warfare sometimes don’t look like what we think they should, but when we fix our eyes on God and trust Him they are
2 Corinthians 10:3–6 HCSB
For though we live in the body, we do not wage war in an unspiritual way, since the weapons of our warfare are not worldly, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments and every high-minded thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to obey Christ. And we are ready to punish any disobedience, once your obedience has been confirmed.
