· 4 viewsMany believers struggle to reconcile God’s authority with His humility. Yet from the opening pages of Scripture to the empty tomb, we see a consistent pattern — God moves first, prepares first, gives first, and serves first. Creation was a table set for Adam. Canaan was a table set for Israel. The cross is a table set for us. When we see the serving heart of God, we are not merely comforted — we are commissioned. As dearly loved children, we imitate our Father. We serve because God serves.

🎯 Title: “The God Who Sets the Table”
Subtitle: Because God serves His people, His people must become servants.
🎬 Opening Thoughts
I am so encourage with the change I see God making in us.
I see it in your conversations.
I see it in your generosity.
I see it in the way many of you are becoming more aware of the needs around you.
Something is shifting — not just behavior, but heart.
Because when God begins to move in a people, He does not start by changing their schedule… He starts by changing their heart.
26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Stone doesn’t feel.
Stone doesn’t respond.
Stone doesn’t serve.
But a heart of flesh does.
A softened heart begins to notice what a hardened heart ignores.
🎬 Opening Paragraph
Have you ever sat down at a beautifully prepared table — a meal you did not cook, plates you did not arrange, a place prepared just for you?
You didn’t earn it.
You didn’t prepare it.
Someone served you.
Now consider this question:
👉 If we belong to a serving God… are our lives marked by the same trait?
And here is what we must understand today:
👉 Service is not a ministry department — it is a family trait.
This is what happens when God gives His children a new heart. We begin to reflect our Father. We begin to care about what He cares about. We begin to move toward people the way He has always moved toward us.
Today we are going to see a pattern that runs from creation to the cross — a God who continually sets the table for His people.
Road Map:
God set the table in Creation.
God set the table in the Canaan.
God set the table at the Cross.
God sets the table through his Church
And once you see it, you cannot unsee it:
Our God serves.
And because we are His children…
👉 Service is not a ministry department — it is a family trait.

God Served Humanity by Preparing Creation
God Served Humanity by Preparing Creation
Day 1: Light — God separated light from darkness. (Genesis 1:3–5)
Day 2: Atmosphere — God created the expanse to separate the waters. (Genesis 1:6–8)
Day 3: Land and Vegetation — God gathered the waters so dry land appeared and caused plants and trees to grow. (Genesis 1:9–13)
Day 4: Sun, Moon, and Stars — God established lights to govern day and night and mark seasons, days, and years. (Genesis 1:14–19)
Day 5: Sea Creatures and Birds — God filled the waters and skies with living creatures. (Genesis 1:20–23)
Day 6: Land Animals and Humanity — God created animals and then made man and woman in His image. (Genesis 1:24–31)
Day 7: Rest — God finished His work and sanctified the day as holy. (Genesis 2:1–3)
Preparation reveals intention.
Preparation reveals intention.
God did not create Adam and then figure things out. Flourishing was designed into the environment.
8 And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
Before Adam lifted a finger — God planted.
Before Adam lifted a finger — God planted.
Before Adam had a need — God anticipated it.

Provision reflects care.

Food, beauty, purpose, provision, and fellowship were already present.

Think of parents preparing a nursery before a child is born. The baby has contributed nothing — yet everything is ready. Preparation is love expressed ahead of time.
Application
Stop interpreting God as reactive. He is already ahead of you.
👉 God is often preparing what you are praying about.
Human Flourishing — Happiness & Life Satisfaction
Security grows when we trust that God is both sovereign and attentive.

10 “And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, 11 and houses full of all good things that you did not fill, and cisterns that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full, 12 then take care lest you forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.

Israel would live in evidence of grace. Not earned — given.
We overestimate our effort and underestimate God’s provision.

True Story: George Müller and the Bristol Orphanages
George Müller (1805–1898) was a 19th-century Christian evangelist and evangelist-founder of the Bristol Orphan Houses in England.
He never asked for funds.
He never went into debt.
He refused to solicit money.
Yet throughout his life, he cared for thousands of children in orphanages — fully clothed, fully fed, fully educated — funded solely on prayer and faith.
What Made It Remarkable
On June 10, 1845, Müller recorded in his diary that he and his helpers had no money at breakfast yet 160 children needed three meals that day.
At 9:00 a.m., after prayer, a baker arrived with enough bread for all the children.
At 11:00 a.m., a milk delivery arrived just as the children were ready for lunch.
At noon, another baker showed up with fresh loaves.
All this was recorded in his journal before anyone knew they were praying for provision.
He wrote:
“I remember again His goodness and faithfulness. God had sent bread again.”
— George Müller, 1845 Journal Entries

God Served Us Ultimately Through Jesus
God Served Us Ultimately Through Jesus
Let’s sit at the feet of Jesus for a moment and learn from our Lord
42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
Greatness in the eyes of the Lord is not being served by others.
Greatness in the eyes of the Lord is not being served by others.
This is the way of the world, not the characteristic of Christ.
Greatness in the eyes of the Lord is serving others.

Serving those that can’t serve you in return.
Serving those that can’t serve you in return.
12 He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
Serving is true religion before God
Serving is true religion before God
27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
Jesus Served Ultimately through the Cross
Jesus Served Ultimately through the Cross
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Creation was preparation.
Canaan was provision.
But the cross is substitution.
Jesus served us in our deepest need — salvation.

8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
The table of salvation and grace is open because the payment is finished.

Application

Receive it. Walk in it.
Preaching Line:
👉 “Jesus didn’t just set the table — He became the bread and the wine.”

1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

The mature believer asks one question daily:
The mature believer asks one question daily:
👉 “Whose table can I set?”
Application
The most impactful people in any church are rarely platform people — they are table setters. Mentors. Volunteers. Disciple-makers. Those who quietly prepare spaces where others encounter God.
If no one is being served by your life, you are drifting from the family resemblance.
👉 “Consumers attend church. Children build it.”
Human Flourishing — Character & Virtue + Close Relationships
Servanthood produces humility, deepens community, and forms Christlike character.
Preaching Line:
👉 “The church is at its best when it stops demanding a seat and starts setting the table.”
🧩 Conclusion
From Creation to Canaan to Calvary to the Church, scripture reveals a God who moves toward His people with generosity and grace. He prepares what we cannot secure, gives what we cannot earn, and redeems what we could never fix. The serving heart of God is not a minor attribute — it is central to who He is. And if we are His children, our lives should echo His character.
The question is no longer, “Is God serving me?” but “Am I reflecting the God who serves?”
Phrase of the Day:
👉 Service is not a ministry department — it is a family trait.
✅ Next Steps (C = DxVxF > R)
1. Dissatisfaction:
Where has comfort replaced calling? Have you been consuming more than serving?
2. Vision:
Imagine a church where everyone sets the table on Sunday mornings, in small groups, and in discipleship groups — marriages strengthened, disciples raised, neighbors reached.
3. First Step:
Men: Be the greatest in your home by become the greatest servant in your home.
Church: Show love for one another by serving each other.
👉 Love always equals Sacrifice, Sacrifice is revealed through Service.
🙏 Altar Call / Gospel Invitation
🙏 Altar Call / Gospel Invitation
Some of you have never sat at the table of salvation.
You are striving… proving… carrying what Jesus already paid for.
Today the invitation is simple: Come to the table.
👉 “The hands that set the table were pierced so we could sit at it.”
For believers — it is time to step out of spiritual passivity. The world does not need more spectators. It needs sons and daughters who resemble their Father.
Ask yourself:
👉 Who is different because I follow Jesus?
👉 Whose burden am I helping carry?
👉 Whose table am I setting?
Come receive grace.
Then go extend it.
Close with the phrase:
👉 Service is not a ministry department — it is a family trait.
