Intro
I. Contrast in Sources of Values
Psalm 1:1-2
The author begins describing the way of the righteous, and off the get go we see the outcome which is “blessed” this is not necessarily for everyone but for those who in the broad sense of course walk in the righteousness of God but in the short sense, those who live and practice the outline covered in this first chapter of Psalms. Yet its in later verses that we see the outcome of the wicked. indeed sets the precedence for the rest of the The 150 poems that were written to be shared & sung.
Who is this outcome for “the man”
ashrê
You could highlight how the righteous delight in God's word and meditate on it day and night. This practice sets the foundation for a life oriented towards righteousness. Encouraging your congregation to prioritize God's word in their daily lives can help them choose the path of righteousness and avoid the influence of the wicked, who dismiss God's counsel. Perhaps, in Christ, we find the ultimate fulfillment of these scriptures as He Himself embodies the law and teaches us to walk in God’s truth.
II. Contrast in Fruit
Psalm 1:3-4
Perhaps, emphasize how the righteous, like trees planted by streams of water, bear fruit in due season and prosper in all they do. This image can suggest the stability and nourishment found in walking with God. Life-giving water can represent Christ, who offers us living water, nourishing our spiritual lives. By rooting ourselves in Him, we produce fruit that not only benefits us but enhances the lives of others, aligning with the big idea of choosing righteousness over wickedness.
III. Contrasting Outcomes of their Lives
Psalm 1:5-6
Maybe focus on the fate of the wicked, who are like chaff blown away by the wind, lacking substance and stability. These verses serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of wickedness. In light of Christ’s ultimate judgment, you can offer hope that He desires all to turn away from sin and come to righteousness. Emphasize that now is the time to choose God's path, not only for personal peace but for eternal security and purpose.
IV. Closing / Application
Summary: This theme explores the contrasting paths taken by the righteous and the wicked, emphasizing moral choices and their consequences.
Application: This sermon encourages Christians and others to reflect on their daily choices, encouraging them to pursue righteousness and avoid the pitfalls of wickedness. It serves as a reminder of the eternal implications of our actions and the importance of aligning ourselves with God's ways.
Teaching: The sermon teaches that life presents us with two distinct paths: one of righteousness that leads to life and blessing, and another of wickedness that leads to destruction and sorrow. It highlights the importance of choices and the transformative power of following God's will.
How this passage could point to Christ: Throughout Scripture, Christ embodies the path of righteousness, offering Himself as the way to true life and fulfillment. He fulfilled the law perfectly and invites believers to walk in His ways, reflecting the righteousness that He imparts.
Big Idea: The big idea is that our daily choices reflect our alignment with either righteousness or wickedness, and that walking in the ways of the Lord leads to blessings, while choosing the path of the wicked results in destruction.
Recommended Study: I suggest examining the biblical examples of the righteous and the wicked in both the Old and New Testaments to enrich your understanding. You might find it helpful to look at various translations of key verses in Logos, particularly focusing on the Hebrew and Greek terms used for 'righteous' and 'wicked.' Additionally, consider exploring commentaries that discuss the moral implications of these paths in the life of believers.
