INTRODUCTION:

1. Today, we are going to lead into a new series on the Armor of God.

A. We are going to be looking at over the next few weeks.

Ephesians 6:10–13 NKJV
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:10–12 NKJV
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

1. In each of these verses, there is a lesson that needs to be learned before we start looking at each individual piece of the armor and what it does for us as Christians.

A. We need to be strong in the Lord.

B. , We need the whole armor of God in order to stand.

C. We need to realize that the armor does not protect us from flesh and blood.

D. We need to do all that we can to stand.

B. Today, we will begin with —the strong knight of God.

BODY:

1. WE NEED TO BE STRONG IN THE LORD.

A. As Christians, why do we need to be strong in the Lord?

Deuteronomy 31:7 NKJV
7 Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and of good courage, for you must go with this people to the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall cause them to inherit it.

1. Notice why Moses told Joshua to be strong; there are two reasons given.

Deut

A. One, you must go with this people to the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them.

1. Joshua was to be a leader, one whom the children of Israel could follow.
A. As Christians, we are to be this type of a leader and it takes strength to lead.
1 Corinthians 11:1 KJV 1900
1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
B. Jesus said that His followers are to be the light of the world so that other may see your good works.
Matthew 5:14–16 NKJV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Jesus said this because He understood that people need strong people who can show them the way.
Matt 5.14-
Acts 8:30–31 NKJV
30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him.
Acts 8:
2. Paul understood this and told the the church at Rome:
Romans 10:14–15 NKJV
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!”
Rom 10:14-

B. Two, why did Joshua need to be strong? Because “you shall cause them to inherit (the promise land) it.”

1. The church at a specific location will either stay faithful to God or not based on its leaders; therefore, leaders must stay strong in the Lord.
A. This is one of the reasons God gave the church elders or shepherds—to lead the church home (the promise land) safely.
Acts 20:28–29 NKJV
28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.
1 Peter 5:2–4 NKJV
2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.
1 Peter 5.2-
B. But this concept does not just apply to the elders; it applies to every one of us. As Christians, we should inspire the people around us to want to be like us.
Matthew 5:16 NKJV
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
1 Timothy 4:12 NKJV
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Philippians 3:17 NKJV
17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern.
C. If we are the pattern and those around us follow us, then they will go to the same place we will. Thus, we will have caused them to inherit heaven at the end of their journey, just as Joshua was the pattern for the Israelites, and he caused them to inherit the promise land at the end of their journey.
Titus 2:1–8 NKJV
1 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. 6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.
Titus 2.1-

B. Where is this strength to come from?

1. It is to come from the Lord.

Ephesians 6:10 NKJV
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

A. Joshua was told to be strong because the “Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 NKJV
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV
6 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

B. This is the same for us today; our strength should come from the Lord.

Philippians 4:13 NKJV
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
1. We should be strong, just as Joshua was, because God will never leave us nor forsake us.
Hebrews 13:5 NKJV
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

C. How are we strengthened by the Lord?

1. By becoming strong in faith.

Romans 4:19–20 NKJV
19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,

A. How are we strengthened in faith?

Romans 10:17 NKJV
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
1. We strengthen our faith by studying God’s Word; therefore, God gives us strength through His Word.
Rom 419-20
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2. Since Jesus is the Word, He is the reason we have strength and all things are possible.
John 1:1 NKJV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

CONCLUSION:

1. We all need to understand this before we will ever understand the importance of the Armor of the Lord.

A. If we are going to put on the Armor of the Lord, we must be strong.

1. A knight in medieval times was not weak; he was strong, in order to carry the weight of the armor but not only that, he was strong because it was his duty to protect the weak.

A. If we are going to be God’s knight and wear His armor, then we must be strong; there are no weak knights.

1. Which one are you? Are you the strong knight or are you the one who needs to be protected?
Romans 15:1 NIV
1 We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.
