Matthew 10:1–42 NASB 2020

Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; and James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who also betrayed Him. These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them, saying, “Do not go on a road to Gentiles, and do not enter a city of Samaritans; but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is deserving of his support. And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay at his house until you leave that city. As you enter the house, give it your greeting. If the house is worthy, see that your blessing of peace comes upon it. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace. And whoever does not receive you nor listen to your words, as you leave that house or city, shake the dust off your feet. Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment, than for that city. “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be as wary as serpents, and as innocent as doves. But be on guard against people, for they will hand you over to the courts and flog you in their synagogues; and you will even be brought before governors and kings on My account, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given you in that hour. For it is not you who are speaking, but it is the Spirit of your Father who is speaking in you. “Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved. “But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. It is enough for the disciple that he may become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they insult the members of his household! “So do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are two sparrows not sold for an assarion? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows. “Therefore, everyone who confesses Me before people, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before people, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to turn a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a person’s enemies WILL BE the members of his household. “The one who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and the one who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And the one who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. The one who has found his life will lose it, and the one who has lost his life on My account will find it. “The one who receives you receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. The one who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and the one who receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person shall receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

The Gospel of Matthew holds first place in all extant witnesses to the text of the four Gospels. Standing first, it forms the link between the Old Testament and the New. However, most scholars today are agreed that the Gospel of Mark is the earliest of the synoptic Gospels, and that the writers of Matthew and of Luke had access to Mark's Gospel as an aid in their writing. Matthew, however, was responsible for an earlier collection of the sayings of Jesus called the logia. In the actual writing of the Gospel of Matthew this provided the basic content material. Twenty or thirty years after Jesus had gone back to heaven, a Jewish disciple named Matthew was inspired by the Spirit of God to write a book. The finished product is what we know today as “The Gospel According to Matthew.”

Nowhere in the four Gospels do we find a single recorded word that Matthew spoke. Yet in his Gospel, he gives us the words and works of Jesus Christ, “the Son of David, the Son of Abraham” (Mat_1:1). Matthew did not write to tell us about himself. But let’s get acquainted with him and the book he wrote. Then we can learn all that he wanted us to know about Jesus Christ. Matthew is (1) of Jesus disciples, that many know as the Tax Collector. He gives us and eyewitness account of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

Date

The Gospel of Matthew was not written until A.D. 70 to 85, late enough in the experience of the early church that the gospel had already been extended to the Gentiles. The early church had ratified the acceptance of "uncircumcised" Gentiles into the church as full participants in the people of God (Eph_2:11-22). Structure

It is significant to compare Matthew with the other synoptic Gospels. Mark, the shortest and no doubt the earlier of the Gospels in their present forms, has 661 verses. Matthew has 1,068 verses and Luke is the longest with 1,149 verses. Matthew, with his concern for content, reproduces at least 606 of Mark's verses, while Luke reproduces 320. There are some 55 verses of Mark which Matthew does not reproduce, but of them Luke reproduces 31. This leaves only 24 verses in the Gospel of Mark not reproduced in either Matthew or Luke. Between the two of them they reproduce 637 of Mark's verses.

In Matthew and Luke there is much more material than Mark supplies, and, comparing the two, there are some 200 verses of this additional material that are almost identical. This similarity has led scholars to see a common sourcebook of the teachings of Jesus which does not now exist. To designate this source scholars use the letter "Q" from the German word for source, Queue. As a handbook of the teachings of Jesus, "Q" provided a source from which the synoptic writers drew material. It might have been the manuscript which Papias refers to as Matthew's collection of the sayings of Jesus in the Hebrew tongue. We cannot affirm more regarding "Q" than the internal evidence. There are several hundred verses which appear in Matthew and Luke but are not in Mark. A study of Matthew's and Luke's use of Mark also shows those usages in all three Gospels which point toward a common source. Whether "Q" is the early collections of Jesus' sayings by Matthew, or whether it is material gathered and written by some other person remains unknown.

Matthew expands Mark at both ends, adding new materials. While he follows Mark's sequence in chapters 3 through 4 and 12 through 28, he rearranged Mark's materials in chapters 5 through 11. He groups material according to theme or type and uniquely presents Jesus' teachings in five major units with a similar concluding formula (Mat7:28-29, Mat11:1, Mat_13:53, Mat19:1, and Mat26:1). Luke says that many had written of the things "fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses" (Luk1:1-2 NIV). While the early church was producing writings about Jesus from oral tradition, the Spirit of God motivated and inspired particular writers to provide an authentic word of the Person and teachings of Jesus Christ which has come down to us in the four Gospels. Tasker explains, "The differences between Matthew and Mark may equally well be explained on the supposition that the Gospel of Matthew retains details originally handed down by the apostle of that name, and that the Gospel of Mark often draws upon Peter's reminiscences." Purpose

Matthew’s Gospel is the bridge that leads us out of the Old Testament and into the New Testament.

The Old Testament is a book of promise, while the New Testament is a book of fulfillment. (To be sure, there are many precious promises in the New Testament. But I am referring to the emphasis of each half of the Bible.) Beginning with Gen3:15, God promised a Redeemer; and Jesus Christ fulfilled that promise. Fulfilled is one of the key words in the Gospel of Matthew, used about fifteen times.

One purpose of this Gospel is to show that Jesus Christ fulfilled the Old Testament promises concerning the Messiah. His birth at Bethlehem fulfilled Isa7:14 (Mat1:22-23). Jesus was taken to Egypt for safety, and this fulfilled Hos11:1 (Mat2:14-15). When Joseph and the family returned and decided to settle in Nazareth, this fulfilled several Old Testament prophecies (Mat2:22-23). Matthew used at least 129 quotations or allusions to the Old Testament in this Gospel. He wrote primarily for Jewish readers to show them that Jesus Christ was indeed their promised Messiah. The proposal that Matthew was written basically for the Jewish community needs to be critically examined. Some claim that Jesus introduced the kingdom to the Jewish community but, upon their rejection, the kingdom was postponed to a future time; i.e., the millennial reign. This theory is advocated by persons who hold a dispensationalist theology with a theory of the postponement of the kingdom. The teachings on the kingdom are consequently seen as nonapplicable to the church but are given for the future millennial age. An advocate of this position, C. I. Scofield, states that the Sermon on the Mount is legal language, and that it is not for the present day but for the millennial age. He then contradicts himself, stating that all of the spiritual teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount for the church-age can be found in the Epistles. In contrast, E. Stanley Jones calls the Sermon on the Mount "the Christian's working philosophy of life."

This issue is answered when we read the Gospel of Matthew under the larger rubric of Heilsgeschichte; i.e., salvation history. Rather than having been written to the Jewish community to offer hope of a future kingdom for them, the Gospel shows the emergence of the people of God in the Judaic tradition; a people which extends beyond the Jewish community to the Gentiles and to the whole world.

A significant emphasis in Matthew is the "church." In all of the synoptic Gospels, the concept of church as ekklesia is found only in Matthew. Jesus introduced the church, in response to Peter's confession, as the ultimate redemptive purpose of the Christ. It was when He introduced it that Jesus also told His disciples of His coming death and resurrection. The church was to be an expression of the New Covenant of the people of God in contradistinction with the Judaic tradition of the continuing expression of the people of God. Jesus' selection of the Twelve was a deliberate symbol that He was constituting a new Israel, and this people of faith were the true heirs of salvation history.

As the early church wrestled with the acceptance of the Gentiles into the Jewish church, James, the brother of our Lord and leader of the church, affirmed that God "visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name." He based his belief on the prophetic word from Amos 9:11 : "After this I will return and will rebuild the tabernacle of David which has fallen down. I will rebuild its ruins, and I will set it up, so that the rest of mankind may seek the LORD , even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, says the LORD who does all these things. As further evidence that Matthew was not written primarily for the Jew, we note the inclusion of materials which are direct confrontations with the Jews. Beginning with John's denunciations in chapter 3, we move to Jesus' conflicts with the Jewish community (Mat 9,12, 15,16,21) and especially the pointed denunciations in Mat 23.
