SUBJECT: I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE (02/08/2026)
Do You Know Him
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.—John 14:6 (KJV)
INTRODUCTION: John 14:6 stands as one of the most definitive and powerful declarations Jesus ever made about Himself. Spoken in a moment when the disciples were troubled and uncertain, His words cut through confusion with clarity and assurance: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” This was not merely a theological statement—it was a personal revelation of who He is and what He offers to every believer.
In a world filled with countless paths, opinions, and pursuits, Jesus does not point toward a way; He declares that He Himself is the Way. In an age where truth is often treated as flexible and subjective, Jesus affirms that He alone is the Truth—unchanging, pure, and absolute. And in the midst of spiritual barrenness and searching, He proclaims that He is the Life—the only source of eternal hope, spiritual strength, and fellowship with the Father.
But His question to Thomas becomes His question to us today: Do you truly know Him? Not simply know about Him, not merely agree with His teachings, but personally know the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. This verse invites us to examine our relationship with Christ and to recognize that everything we need—direction, understanding, purpose, and eternal life—is found in Him alone.
The Setting of the Text-John 14:6 takes place in the Upper Room on the night before Jesus’ crucifixion. This is the same place where:
Jesus washed the disciples’ feet (John 13)
Jesus predicted Judas’ betrayal
Jesus foretold Peter’s denial
Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper (recorded in the Synoptic Gospels)
This was an intimate, private gathering with the eleven faithful disciples, after Judas had already gone out into the night.
The Emotional Atmosphere — Troubled Hearts
The disciples were:
Confused
Afraid
Uncertain about the future
Troubled by Jesus’ talk of leaving
Jesus begins John 14 with: “Let not your heart be troubled…” This sets the emotional tone: fear, confusion, and sorrow—and Jesus speaks comfort.
The Immediate Context — Thomas’ Question
John 14:6 is Jesus’ direct response to Thomas, who said: “Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?”
Thomas’ question reveals:
Lack of understanding
Desire for clarity
A genuine mindset when Jesus was speaking spiritually
Jesus answers with a bold, exclusive, divine declaration.
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way,the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.—John 14:6 (KJV)
1. Christ is the Way (John 14:6)
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way” (John 14:6). Christ is the way of salvation. He is the way to justification, righteousness, acceptance, and communion with the Heavenly Father. Christ is the only way of salvation. “No man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). There is no room for other ways in that statement. It excludes every way except the Christ-way. Significantly, in Acts, the word “way” is used to describe the Gospel (see Acts 9:2; 19:9; 19:23; 22:4; 24:22).
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.—John 14:6 (KJV)
2. Christ is the Truth (John 14:6)
“I am … the truth” (John 14:6). This great statement about Christ has a crucial twofold application.
• Truth speaks of knowledge. Christ is the great essential truth to know. He is the One Truth we must know to be saved. Failure to know this truth will lead to eternity in hell. Pilate lost everything because he failed to see the truth. He asked Christ, “What is truth?” (John 18:38) when Truth stood right before him.
Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.” John 18:38 (KJV)
• Truth also speaks of character. Being the “truth,” Christ is holy, pure, and sinless. He is the personification of integrity. Those who follow Jesus Christ, the Truth, ought to manifest the truth in their lives.
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32 (KJV)
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.—John 14:6 (KJV)
3. Christ is the Life (John 14:6)
“I am … the life” (John 14:6). Sin has brought death (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:1), but Christ gives life. Many folk look for life in a bottle (booze), a party, and a needle (drugs). But life is in Christ. “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). This is not the life of a party, but the eternal life of a redeemed person.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23 (KJV)

“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;” Ephesians 2:1 (KJV)

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.—John 14:6 (KJV)
The phrase "no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" suggests that Jesus believes he is the only way for people to connect with or reach God the Father. It emphasizes that faith in Jesus is essential for salvation and for a relationship with God.
Closing to John 14:6 — Going to the Cross
When Jesus declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” He wasn’t giving the disciples a slogan to memorize—He was pointing them to a sacrifice they didn’t yet understand. The way He would make was not a path paved with comfort, but a path that led up a hill called Calvary. The truth He would reveal was not spoken only through sermons, but written in His own blood as He hung on the cross. And the life He promised would come only through His death, when He conquered the grave and rose with all power in His hands.
If you want to see the fullness of John 14:6, you must stand at the foot of the cross. There, you see the Way—His arms stretched wide, making a bridge back to the Father. There, you see the Truth—the holy God refusing to overlook sin, yet choosing to forgive it through His own Son. There, you see the Life—the eternal life purchased by the One who laid His life down and took it up again.
So the question remains: Do you know Him? Not just the Jesus who taught in the temple… Not just the Jesus who healed the sick and raised the dead… But the Jesus who went to the cross for you?
Because it was on that cross that the Way was opened, Because it was on that cross that the Way was opened, the Truth was proven, and the Life was secured.
And today—because of Calvary—He still stands before every soul declaring: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The door is open. The path is clear. All that remains is your response: Do you know Him?
