Communion- A Means of Grace
Communion- A Means of Grace
Last Few Weeks -
We’ve studied the means of grace.
Transition - Table Talk Magazine
A brief survey of the top fifty best-selling Christian books reveals what subjects are of the greatest and least interest to the majority of professing Christians. Books on purpose, finances, personality, self-esteem, love languages, and relational boundaries dominate the list. Books on the triune God, Christ, sin, the gospel, Scripture, preaching, the sacraments, prayer, church discipline, and the local church are woefully wanting. Since Jesus Christ and His saving work form the foundation of our faith (1 Cor. 2:2; 3:11), we should be most concerned about knowing how to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 3:18). Our growth in the grace of Christ will be commensurate with our use of the means God has appointed. Theologians refer to these as “means of grace” (media gratia).
I have many of those top books Ive read -
Boundaries by Dr Henry Cloud
Atomic Habits by James Clear
The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren
Letting Go by Feneleon
But I also have books -
Many on doctrine, sanctification, salvation, the gospel, theological treatieses, prayer and the sacrements.
He is on point I think!
WE SHOULD BE MOST CONCERENED WITH WHAT?
2 Peter 3:18 “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
How do I grow today? This week? This year?
How do I grow today? This week? This year?
MEDIA GRATIA - in theological terms… Means of Grace.
Safe with Millions
Safe with Millions
Your grandpa told you about it, your grandpa’s grandpa told you about it… Its behind the basement wall. There’s a location, a map, and 4 safes.
Each with a million bucks.
What could a million bucks do… what about 4 million dollars.
Theres a new show called - In which peope compete for millions of dollars. I have found it interesting what people would be willing to do for money!
A million dollars could change your family tree… for some they wanted to start a non profit and find a cure for their childs uncurable disease, others gave to their favorite charity, one guy said he’d use to pay off 470,000 in debt.
wow!
What if this money was available… but it was legally yours.
What if they continued as if it wasn’t there… its not a big deal.
Possession without action changes nothing.
4 Big Chests of GRACE
4 Big Chests of GRACE
For all of us he’s provided chests of ordinary GRACE to our lives.
Grace for trials, hurts, difficulty, troubles. Grace when we feel crushed and perplexed.
Some scholars call these the big ones. - These are simple - not flashy.
They require work… like millions you’ll have to dig after, make a call, schedule some time with God,
Obedience to God always requires some level of sacrifice.
Grace is available.
What is in each of these chests? Its called Grace!
GRACES CONDUIT — PRAYER with GOD
GRACES CONDUIT — PRAYER with GOD
our relationship with God through talking and listneing
communing with God
We’ve enjoyed special focus this month on prayer.
Mark 11:17 “And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.””
During the week I was sick - Jim Cymbala shared on prayer.
He spoke on the idea that men and even some chrurches today have altered its meaning to mean “praise team”, or “
Whenever things have grown cold down through the ages, and things have grown crass, and commercialized, or cold and dead, or secular and worldy and hard… God sends a revival… and whats always the sign of the revival behold they pray.”
“When you pray, you speak to God; when you read Scripture, God speaks to you.”
— Jerome
“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”
— Martin Luther
“Prayer is the way you defeat the devil, reach the lost, restore a backslider, strengthen the saints, send laborers into the harvest, cure the sick, accomplish the impossible, and know the will of God.”
— David Jeremiah
“Prayer is simply talking to God like a friend and should be the easiest thing we do each day.”
— Joyce Meyer
John Piper
“Prayer is the open admission that without Christ we can do nothing.”
What is prayer?
What is prayer?
Tim Keller
“Prayer is continuing a conversation that God has started through His Word and His grace.”
Psalm 62:8 — “Trust in him at all times… pour out your heart before him.”
Pour your heart out! Converse!
Pour your heart out! Converse!
God longs to hear you - Have you poured out your heart to him. He promises to hear!
Summary:
the entire Bible, prayer is presented as the God-ordained means by which people align themselves with His will, depend on His power, confess sin, receive mercy, gain wisdom, endure suffering, intercede for others, and participate in how He carries out His purposes in history; it is the relational channel through which faith is expressed, hearts are transformed, communities are preserved, guidance is given, and God’s presence is experienced — not as magic that forces outcomes, but as a conversation that draws humans into partnership with a listening God who chooses to work through His people.

Anyone ever had a plumbing backup? Your sink or your tub wouldn’t go down.
Recnetly I was doing bath time with the kids and noticed that it wouldn’t drain.
SO I unscrewed...
Maybe there was something blocking it...
I pulled out a long string of hair, gook, pure nasty stuff… then guess what - things drain again!
Are you using this channel of grace to your life?
What’s blocking it?
How do we fly high in 2026 - we use the channel of grace of prayer.
Next we studied The Word.
GRACES CONDUIT — THROUGH THE WORD
GRACES CONDUIT — THROUGH THE WORD
anyone can study Gods word!
a collection of Gods written words to us.
Want to know Gods will - read his word.
Carefully assembled across centuries, written by shepherds and kings, prophets and priests, fishermen and physicians, exiles and apostles—men from every walk of life—yet superintended by one divine Author. As Peter declares, “Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Pet. 1:21). The same Spirit who breathed life into creation breathed out these words (2 Tim. 3:16), preserving them, unifying them, and delivering them to you.
Throughout time man has been bloodly beaten, martyrd, halfved, and hung for the contents of this book.
Empires have tried to silence it. Tyrants have outlawed it. Critics have buried it. Yet it lives, because its Author lives.
This book contains not merely history, but holy history—redemption recorded, truth revealed, Christ unveiled. GOD in flesh.
What is God like? we can look to the pages of scriputre thorugh the PERSON of jesus Christ!

Hosea 4:1 “Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land;”
Looking around us in America - we see many problems.
Looking around us in America - we see many problems.
Hosea is facing a reality in Israel.
And the reality is this: God’s people have abandoned God and consequently they have fallen into all kinds of sin.
When a nation ceases to hear the WORDS OF THE LORD, confusion and chaos takes place.
And when the foundation was gone, what was left is in verse 2.
Hosea 4:2 “there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.”
We see a broken society. We NEED Gods word to restore our broken world!

One of the ways we can flourish is when we are intentional about our spiritual formation AND are living in community with a group of committed believers.
Today we live more CONNECTED then ever before.
2025: ~6.0 billion people are online, about 74% of the world.
U.S. adults with smartphones (2025): 91%, up from 35% in 2011
The “typical” internet user spends ~6 hours 40 minutes online per day (global estimate).
The “typical” social media user spends ~2 hours 23 minutes per day on social platforms.
Really less ALONE then ever before… yet never have we been more alone.
Connection. We are really connected!
APA POLL - six in 10 U.S. adults reported feeling this way, while half or more adults said they felt isolated (54%), left out (50%) or lacking companionship (50%) often or some of the time.
Is it working?
Ecclesiastes 4:8–12 “one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks, “For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business. Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
What’s the point here?
Money? - no
Toil? - no
Satisfaction? - no
It’s community or “connection” and how needed it is.

In his book Organizing Genius, author Warren Bennis writes,
We cling to the myth of the Lone Ranger, the romantic idea that great things are usually accomplished by a larger-than-life individual working alone…But, in a global society…collaboration is not simply desirable, it is inevitable. In all but the rarest cases, one is too small a number to produce greatness. (p. 2)
You are needed! The body of christ needs you.
Maybe your wounded, your Christian brother or sister can help carry YOU.
When you get tired of tracking the trail, you friend in Christ can pickup the scent.
When your trapped, your community can come around you to offer support or a way out.
How? First belong to Christ, Second Listen Well, Third Love Well.
Beautiful Results of Community
They made the grace of God credible by a society of love and mutual care which astonished pagans and was recognized as something entirely new.
The means of grace are God’s appointed instruments by which the Holy Spirit enables believers to receive Christ and the benefits of redemption.

Lastly the Sacrament's.
This one includes baptism and also communion.
Wherever we see ordinary salvation we also see extraordinary baptism.
Baptism was just an outward sign to the world of what Jesus had done inside.
Is for those who have professed their faith in Jesus Christ.

GRACES CONDUIT - COMMUNION/SACREMENTS
GRACES CONDUIT - COMMUNION/SACREMENTS
I thought it fitting on our last Sunday together that we should celebrate communion.
While Communion alone can’t save… if you come in faith asking to be saved while at the communion table it can most certainly save!
The sacraments become effectual means of salvation, not from any virtue in them, or in him that does administer them; but only by the blessing of Christ, and the working of his Spirit in them that by faith receive them.
Martin Luther and the Sacraments:
Martin Luther and the Sacraments:
Martin Luther wanted a view of the sacraments that avoided two extremes:
empty symbolism (mere reminders with no divine action), and
mechanical ritualism (automatic grace without faith).
His solution was what he believed Scripture itself taught: God uses physical means to deliver real grace, but only as they are received in faith.
Luther defined a sacrament as:
Luther defined a sacrament as:
a visible sign instituted by Christ that carries God’s promise and actually delivers what it promises.
Three elements must be present:
Christ’s institution (commanded by Jesus)
A physical element (water, bread, wine)
A divine promise attached to the element
He famously summarized:
“The Word added to the element makes the sacrament.”
So water alone is just water. Bread alone is just bread.
But water + God’s promise = Baptism.
Bread/juice + Christ’s words = the Lord’s Supper.
ELEMENTS DONT SAVE!
As we look back to when Jesus celebrated… and go back to Egypt.
History Lesson
History Lesson
Passover was a Jewish feast that celebrated the night when the nation of Israel left Egypt.
The celebration was not just about deliverance from Egypt; it was celebration of God’s mercy to them when he killed Egyptians but passed over the houses of the Israelites (Exodus 12:27).
The event was a symbol of the mercy of God toward his people.
After the deliverance from Egypt, the Israelites had a Passover feast every year. God gave them ceremonies for that day which included special food and the ceremonial use of blood.
The event was a type of salvation. That does not mean that the people who were delivered that day were all forgiven of their sins and in right relationship with God. However, they were delivered from slavery, they received mercy from God, and blood was part of God’s requirement.
Those details make this event an illustration of the salvation provided by Christ. Most Israelites celebrated the Passover without realizing its full meaning.
At the last Passover that Jesus shared with his disciples, he explained its meaning.
He instituted a ceremony for the church to practice when he said “Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:15-20).
Churches call this ceremony “The Lord’s Supper,” or “Communion,” or the “Eucharist,” or the “Mass.”
Churches call this ceremony “The Lord’s Supper,” or “Communion,” or the “Eucharist,” or the “Mass.”
Paul wrote that this custom is to be practiced regularly by the church until Jesus returns (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
The church had other special times of feasting and fellowship that should not be confused with communion.
—- For example, when the Bible says that the early believers were “breaking bread in their homes,” we should remember that the term breaking bread simply referred to eating (Acts 2)
They were fellowshipping by eating together in various homes.
—-The church also had “love feasts” that were not the same as communion (Jude 12).
The Invitation
The Invitation
One of these means of grace to our lives as believers is COMMUNION
It’s a time to remember and reflect in the life of the believer.
Jesus said with his disciples in the upper room, “Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”…
As they broke bread and shared the juice - today Jesus offers us life, hope, and forgiveness.
Communion won’t save you. But if during communion today you choose to place your faith and trust in Jesus and repent of your sins. You can be saved.
It doesn’t matter your past, God can redeem it. It doesn’t matter how broken your present is - God gave his life to restore it.
To repent is to turn. You can turn away from your old life, and trust Jesus today - to SAVE you.
If that’s you - Just offer a simple prayer today during communion -offering yourself to God - all of you, asking Him to come in and forgive and make new!
Today we are reminded:
Today we are reminded:
THIS BINDS US TOGETHER - Communion reminds the Church that Christ binds believers together:
“The fellowship of the table is fellowship in Christ.” - Deitreich Bonhoeffer
Today we link arms with believers in heaven and in earth across all of time - and fellowship at the table.
What a thought!
Communion reminds us:
Christ truly died for our sins (historical memory)
We all need Jesus to save us, and even now we can be saved. (spiritual reality)
We belong to His body together (communal unity)
We receive His promise personally individually - giving us confidence to approach his throne of grace! (assurance)
We are being transformed daily - as we think back and reflect we look ahead to more growth in the future! (holiness)
We await His return - and long for the day of the trumpet blast - Crying Come Lord Jesus Come! (future hope)
Why do we celebrate?
Why do we celebrate?
We proclaim Jesus and refocus our hearts.
1 Corinthians 11:26 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
Jesus has paid the debt we owed!
At Jesus’ last Passover meal with the disciples, he said that the bread was his body and the wine was his blood. He would give his life for their salvation.
John 6:51 “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.””
We do what the apostles, and church for all time has done!
Acts 2:42 “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
Doing it together reminds us we are one body, united commonly through Jesus!
1 Corinthians 10:17 “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.”
Ultimately communion looks back, and looks forward… to the GREAT TABLE IN HEAVEN - rejoicing!
In Matthew 26:29 Jesus says I won’t drink the fruit of the vine.. or grape juice... “until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:29).
So today when we take communion, we also look forward with hope to the great wedding feast in heaven.
Revelation 19:6–9 “Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.””
Someday we won’t PART from communion but our communion with one antoher will be ETERNAL! In that heavenly city - evil will be defeated and we will rejoice in the restored world!
Today - Who may take communion?
Today - Who may take communion?
Let us examine our soul!
1 Corinthians 11:28 “Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”
All may join us at the table, if they confess Jesus...
Romans 10:9–10 “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
Anyone who places their faith in Christ - repentant! Come to the table.

Story
Story
Richard Wurmbrand was a Lutheran pastor in Romania who spent 14 years in prison for refusing to deny Christ under the Communist regime.
For three of those years, he was kept in complete solitary confinement — underground, no light, no Bible, no fellowship. The guards wore felt on their shoes so he couldn’t hear them walk. Prisoners were forbidden from speaking or singing.
But Richard did not forget his Lord — nor did he forget the Lord’s Supper.
He tells of how, in that utter silence, he would hold imaginary communion, whispering to God:
“This is Your body, broken for me. This is Your blood, shed for my sins.”
When he was moved to a larger cell with others, they risked severe beatings to whisper prayers and hold communion together. Sometimes, they would save a crust of bread from their daily ration. When they had nothing, they’d use their imagination trust in Jesus just as Christ said:
“Do this in remembrance of me.”
One day, an atheist cellmate asked Richard:
“What are you people doing when you sit still with your eyes closed?”
Richard answered:
“We are eating the Bread of Life.”
In other words: we are drinking deeply of Gods grace - through communion and fellowship with God.
Search Me
Search Me
Here at the table - we ask God to search us, try us.
Now we ask God to fearlessly search our our hearts before him-
Psalm 139:23–24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”
We remind ourselves that being of the flesh is impossible as oil and water. Search out our hearts for any form sin may take.
1 John 2:15 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
Confession
Confession
Today we confess our sins, faults, or those things which keep us from living in step with the Spirit or in Relationship with Almighty God.
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Acts 24:16 “So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.”
Today we pause - and we reflect before almighty God examining and confessing.
Join me as we pause to reflect.
SILENCE and PIANO.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
Let us pray.
Let us pray.
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Supreme Judge of all men; We acknowledge our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we from time to time most grievously have committed, By our thoughts, our actions, and our words against your Divine Majesty, provoking most justly your wrath and indignation against us. Of our sins - We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry. Remembering them brings deep sadness to our hearts. For this we cry have mercy upon us Father, Son, and Spirit - through the blood of the Lamb… forgive us all that is our past.
Grant us that from here on we may serve and please you in restored - newness of life, to the glory of Almighty God, Amen.

TAKE THE ELEMENTS IN HAND
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who, because of your tender mercy, did give your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there (by the giving of himself) offered a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and did begin and command for us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death until his coming again; hear us today.
O merciful Father, we most humbly ask you, and grant that we, receiving these your creatures of bread and juice, according to your Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, remembering his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood: who, in the same night that he was betrayed *

Would you say the Lords prayer together as we close.
Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed by thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy Will be done on Earth, As it is in Heaven: Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil: For thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, For ever. Words of Assurance
Words of Assurance
Then all standing, the Elder shall say,
Hear what ENCOURAGING words now Jesus says to us through his saving grace!
Hebrews 10:22 “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.”
Isaiah 43:25 ““I, I am HE who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins (against you).”
Today if we’ve claimed the name of Jesus for salvation - we are saved. Forgiven. Washed.
In light of this we cry out with David!
The Great Thanksgiving
The Great Thanksgiving
Psalm 107 “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble.....
Psalm 103:2–4 “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,”
Therefore, with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven and on earth: we cry:
Revelation 4:11 ““Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.””

The Olympic Games are a global spectacle, a celebration of athleticism.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics, often dubbed the "Green Games," were estimated to have consumed a whopping 4.5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity. That's enough to power over a million homes for an entire year!
I imagine this years power far exceeds that!.… But imagine for a moemnt that someoen forgot to plug in “and turn on the power”.
-Sure they might be able to run while they stumbled a bit in the dark,
- or maybe they’d do the ski jumps during daylight and have to cut off the snow machines but some when home with injuries because there wasn’t enough snow
-Maybe the Sound system in the arena failed to function so it called chaos and delays.
What’s wrong?
Could it still function?
Yes but verry poorly.
God has wonderful means of grace to us in 2026 -
God has wonderful means of grace to us in 2026 -
Can we still function without the means of grace - maybe… but not for very long!
We will be stunted, getting needlessly hurt, tripping over things...
Join me in committing to use these (and some I haven’t had time to talk much about)…
No matter how difficult your moments now, or what challenges or victory's come down the life for your or I.… there’s grace available!
2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
Praise be to Jesus!
