Pastor:
Today is a special and sacred moment in the life of our church. We gather to ordain a servant of God to the office of deacon. The word deacon means “servant,” and this office is rooted in the New Testament example of servant leadership in the church.
The model for deacons is found in Acts 6:2–3
2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, ‘It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
Deacons are called to serve Christ, support the ministry of the church, care for the congregation, and assist the pastor so that the Gospel may go forward.
Presentation of the Candidate
Pastor:
Having been elected by the church and examined by the deacons, we present [Candidate’s Name] to be ordained to the office of deacon.
Candidate comes forward.
Biblical Qualifications
Pastor reads 1 Timothy 3:8–13
8 Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Charge to the Church
