INTRO — “THE MOMENT JESUS SPOKE HIS FIRST MUST”
Church, Luke gives us something in this passage that no other Gospel writer gives us:
the first recorded words of Jesus.
Not His first miracle.
Not His first sermon.
Not His baptism.
Not His temptation.
But His first words —
and those words reveal His mission, His identity, and His priority.
At twelve years old, Jesus says:
“I MUST be about my Father’s business.”
(Luke 2:49)
Not “I might.”
Not “I hope.”
Not “I’ll try.”
Not “If it’s convenient.”
But I MUST.
Church, hear me:
The Christian life is built on the must of the Master.
If Jesus had a must,
so do you.
If Jesus had a divine necessity,
so do you.
If Jesus had a holy assignment,
so do you.
Somebody shout:
“I’ve got a must on my life!”
POINT 1 — “THE MUST OF MATURITY”
Luke 2:40 — “And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit…”
Before Jesus ever said “I MUST,”
He grew.
He waxed strong.
He developed.
He matured.
Luke wants you to see this:
Growth is not optional — it is essential.
You cannot be about the Father’s business
if you refuse the Father’s process.
🔥 Preaching Riff — “Grow Up in God”
You can’t stay on milk when God is calling you to meat.
You can’t stay in survival when God is calling you to service.
You can’t stay in excuses when God is calling you to excellence.
You can’t stay in yesterday when God is calling you into destiny.
Paul said:
“When I became a man, I put away childish things.”
(1 Corinthians 13:11)
Growth is not glamorous.
Growth is not public.
Growth is not instant.
But growth is necessary.
🔥 Memorize‑Ready Scripture
2 Peter 3:18 — “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord…”
Church, if Jesus grew,
you must grow.
POINT 2 — “THE MUST OF SEEKING”
Luke 2:46 — “They found Him… sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.”
Jesus is twelve.
He is in the Temple.
He is not playing.
He is not wandering.
He is not wasting time.
He is seeking.
He is listening.
He is learning.
He is asking.
He is engaging.
Church, hear me:
You cannot be about the Father’s business if you are not in the Father’s presence.
🔥 Preaching Riff — “Seek Until You Find”
Seek until the Word opens.
Seek until the Spirit speaks.
Seek until the burden lifts.
Seek until the fire falls.
Seek until the must becomes clear.
Jesus said:
“Seek, and ye shall find.”
(Matthew 7:7)
Not “seek once.”
Not “seek casually.”
Not “seek when you feel like it.”
But seek until heaven answers.
POINT 3 — “THE MUST OF PRIORITY”
Luke 2:49 — “I MUST be about my Father’s business.”
This is the center of the passage.
This is the heartbeat of the text.
This is the revelation of the Son.
Jesus is saying:
“My life is not random — it is ruled by a divine must.”
Church, what rules your life?
Convenience or calling?
Comfort or conviction?
Feelings or faith?
Culture or Christ?
🔥 Preaching Riff — “The Must That Moves You”
When God gives you a must, you can’t stay silent.
When God gives you a must, you can’t stay stuck.
When God gives you a must, you can’t stay small.
When God gives you a must, you can’t stay in the crowd.
When God gives you a must, you can’t live for applause — you live for assignment.
Jeremiah said:
“His word was in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones…”
(Jeremiah 20:9)
That’s a must.
Paul said:
“Woe is unto me if I preach not the gospel.”
(1 Corinthians 9:16)
That’s a must.
Jesus said:
“I MUST work the works of Him that sent me…”
(John 9:4)
That’s the must of the Master.
POINT 4 — “THE MUST OF ALIGNMENT”
Luke 2:51 — “And He went down with them… and was subject unto them.”
This is shocking.
The Son of God submits to earthly parents.
The Creator submits to the created.
The King submits to a carpenter.
Why?
Because alignment precedes assignment.
You cannot be about the Father’s business
if you refuse the Father’s order.
🔥 Preaching Riff — “Submission Is Strength”
Submission is not weakness — it is wisdom.
Submission is not losing — it is learning.
Submission is not bondage — it is blessing.
Submission is not delay — it is development.
James 4:7 says:
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
You cannot resist the devil
if you do not submit to God.
POINT 5 — “THE MUST OF INCREASE”
Luke 2:52 — “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”
Jesus didn’t just grow —
He increased.
He increased in wisdom — that’s His mind.
He increased in stature — that’s His maturity.
He increased in favor with God — that’s His spirit.
He increased in favor with man — that’s His influence.
Church, hear me:
Increase is the evidence of obedience.
🔥 Preaching Riff — “You Were Born to Increase”
Increase in prayer.
Increase in holiness.
Increase in discernment.
Increase in faithfulness.
Increase in spiritual strength.
Increase in the fear of the Lord.
Increase in the must of the Master.
Psalm 115:14 says:
“The Lord shall increase you more and more…”
That’s your promise.
That’s your portion.
That’s your path.
🔥 FINAL PREACHING RIFF — “THE MUST OF THE MASTER IS ON ME”
Church, Jesus had a must —
and that must carried Him from the Temple
to the Jordan,
to the wilderness,
to the villages,
to the sick,
to the broken,
to the cross,
to the grave,
and to the resurrection.
And that same must is calling you.
🔥 Riff — “I Must Because He Must”
I must pray because He prayed.
I must obey because He obeyed.
I must grow because He grew.
I must seek because He sought.
I must surrender because He surrendered.
I must be about the Father’s business because He was about the Father’s business.
Church, the night is breaking.
The Dayspring has risen.
The Spirit is stirring.
The must is calling.
Somebody lift your voice and declare:
“I MUST be about my Father’s business!”
