INTRO

WE’RE MORE CONNECTED THAN EVER, YET MANY OF US FEEL MORE ISOLATED, FRUSTRATED, OR MISUNDERSTOOD.
IF THEY WOULD JUST CHANGE…”
(REAL)ATIONSHIPS DON’T BEGIN WITH FIXING OTHERS, THEY BEGIN WITH LETTING GOD WORK IN ME.

MAIN IDEA

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS BEGIN WITH A HEALTHY HEART.
Proverbs 4:23 NLT
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

1. THE CONDITION OF MY HEART SHAPES EVERY RELATIONSHIP I HAVE.

A. MY HEART DETERMINES MY ACTIONS.

Luke 6:45 NLT
A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.
YOU DON’T REACT OUT OF THE MOMENT, YOU REACT OUT OF THE HEART.
PRESSURE DOESN’T CREATE WHAT COMES OUT OF YOU; IT REVEALS IT.
IF MY REACTIONS SURPRISE ME, IT’S TIME TO CHECK MY HEART.

B. I CAN’T SEPARATE MY INNER LIFE FROM MY RELATIONAL LIFE.

Proverbs 27:19 NLT
As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.
MY RELATIONSHIPS OFTEN REVEAL WHAT’S HAPPENING INSIDE ME.
WHAT’S GOING ON IN MY HEART EVENTUALLY SHOWS UP.
HEALTHY HEARTS CREATE HEALTHIER CONNECTION.

C. GUARDING MY HEART IS A SPIRITUAL RESPONSIBILITY.

Proverbs 4:23 NLT
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
PEACE DOESN’T HAPPEN ACCIDENTALLY, IT’S PROTECTED INTENTIONALLY.
GUARDED HEARTS LEAD TO GROUNDED RELATIONSHIPS.

2. UNADDRESSED HEART ISSUES SABOTAGE EVEN GOOD RELATIONSHIPS.

A. PAST WOUNDS INFLUENCE PRESENT CONVERSATIONS
Hebrews 12:15 NLT
Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
OLD PAIN HAS A WAY OF SHOWING UP IN NEW MOMENTS.
HURT THAT ISN’T HEALED BECOMES HURT THAT’S REPEATED.
YOU CAN’T BUILD SOMETHING NEW WHILE BLEEDING SOMETHING OLD.
B. OFFENSE BUILDS WALLS THAT LOVE STRUGGLES TO CLIMB.
Proverbs 18:19 NLT
An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars.
WALLS FEEL SAFE, BUT THEY KEEP HEALING OUT.
UNCHECKED OFFENSE HARDENS HEARTS AND RELATIONSHIPS.
C. WHAT I DON’T SURRENDER TO GOD, I PROJECT ONTO OTHERS.
Psalm 55:22 NLT
Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
PEOPLE AREN’T DESIGNED TO CARRY GOD-SIZED EXPECTATIONS.
UNMET NEEDS TURN INTO UNHEALTHY DEMANDS.

3. HEART HEALTH STARTS WITH PERSONAL OWNERSHIP.

A. I’M RESPONSIBLE FOR MY HEART, NOT SOMEONE ELSE’S BEHAVIOR.
Romans 12:18 NLT
Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.
MATURITY BEGINS WHERE EXCUSES END.
OWNERSHIP IS THE DOORWAY TO GROWTH.
B. GOD DOES HIS BEST WORK IN HONEST HEARTS.
Psalm 51:10 NLT
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.
GOD HEALS WHAT WE’RE WILLING TO EXPOSE.
A SURRENDERED HEART IS A RENEWABLE HEART.
C. A HEALED HEART LOVES BETTER AND LASTS LONGER.
Colossians 3:12–13 NLT
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
HEALED PEOPLE HEAL PEOPLE.
HEART HEALTH SETS THE TONE FOR RELATIONAL HEALTH.

CONCLUSION/CLOSE

IF GOD CAN HEAL MY HEART, HE CAN RESHAPE MY RELATIONSHIPS.
GOD IS ALWAYS WILLING TO START WITH ME.
WHEN GOD CHANGES OUR HEART, HE CHANGES EVERYTHING CONNECTED TO IT.
(REAL)ATIONSHIPS DON’T START WITH FIXING THEM, THEY START WITH ME.

COMMUNION

1 Corinthians 11:23–26 NLT
For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
