Adult Discipleship Pathway – Teacher Binder
Week 4: Who Is Jesus?
(Revelation Before Response)
PURPOSE OF THIS LESSON (READ FIRST)
This lesson helps people clearly see who Jesus truly is according to Scripture.
Many people admire Jesus, agree with His teachings, or see Him as a helper. Scripture reveals Jesus as God in the flesh, Lord of all, and the only way to God.
This lesson is not about opinions, preferences, or personal versions of Jesus. It is about revelation.
***(NOTE TO TEACHER – you do not need to persuade or debate. Read the Scripture, ask the questions, and allow God’s Word to reveal Christ.)
BIG IDEA (Repeat often throughout the lesson)
Through the scriptures we will see how Jesus is revealed to us as to who He is and we know from scripture that you cannot truly follow Jesus until you clearly see who He is. Join me in discovering who Jesus actually is this morning.
SECTION 1: START HERE – THE QUESTION JESUS ASKS (5 minutes)
SECTION 1: START HERE – THE QUESTION JESUS ASKS (5 minutes)
Say something like:
“Last week we talked about the power of the Gospel. This week we step back and ask a foundational questions: Who is Jesus?”
READ ALOUD:
13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Explain in simple terms:
Jesus was not asking the disciples what everyone else was saying who He was. He was asking for their own personal conviction about who He is.
Ask the group:
• Why do you think Jesus made this question personal?
• Why does it matter who we believe Jesus is?
the importance of who we believe Jesus is determines our eternal salvation, it also shapes our identity as a follower of Christ, it also defines the authority that we possess.
it s essential for receiving forgiveness and having a personal relationship wih God.
SECTION 2: JESUS IS ETERNAL GOD (8 minutes)
SECTION 2: JESUS IS ETERNAL GOD (8 minutes)
READ ALOUD:
John 1:1-5 ,14
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Explain:
Jesus was not created. He existed before all things. He is God who took on flesh and lived among us.
Say:
“Jesus is not just someone who teaches us about God – He is God who came to us.”
Ask:
• How does knowing Jesus is the eternal God change how we listen to Him?
does it change casual listening into listening intently?
instills absolute trust
complete reverence
Obedience above all
• Why is it important that God came near instead of remaining distant?
it gives us a concept of His divinity
a relatable relationship
gives comfort
bridges the gap caused by our limitations
moves salvation from distant hope into a reality
SECTION 3: JESUS IS SUPREME AND PREEMINENT (8 minutes)
SECTION 3: JESUS IS SUPREME AND PREEMINENT (8 minutes)
READ ALOUD:
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
Explain:
Jesus is the image of the invisible God. All things were created through Him and for Him. He holds everything together.
Say:
“Jesus is not part of your life – He is the center of it. (or should be)”
Ask:
• What does it mean that everything exists for Jesus?
• What areas of life do people struggle to place under His authority?
SECTION 4: JESUS IS GOD REVEALED (7 minutes)
SECTION 4: JESUS IS GOD REVEALED (7 minutes)
READ ALOUD:
1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
Explain:
Jesus is not just another messenger for God. He is the final and full revelation of God.
Say:
“If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus.”
Ask:
Why do people prefer hearing about God rather than encountering Him?
What does it mean that Jesus is greater than prophets, angels, or religious systems?
SECTION 5: JESUS IS HUMBLE SERVANT AND EXALTED LORD (7 minutes)
SECTION 5: JESUS IS HUMBLE SERVANT AND EXALTED LORD (7 minutes)
READ ALOUD:
5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Explain:
Jesus humbled Himself. He obeyed completely. God exalted Him above every name.
Say:
“Jesus laid down His rights – and God gave Him supreme authority.”
Ask:
What stands out to you about Jesus’ humility?
Why is it significant that every knee will bow to Jesus?
SECTION 6: JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY (5 minutes)
READ ALOUD: John 14:6
READ ALOUD: John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Explain:
Jesus did not claim to show the way – He claimed to be the way.
Truth is not determined by sincerity, culture, or preference. Truth is revealed by God.
Ask :
Why is this statement difficult for today’s culture?
How is this different from seeing Jesus as one option among many?
SECTION 7: PERSONAL REFLECTION (5 minutes)
SECTION 7: PERSONAL REFLECTION (5 minutes)
Invite quiet reflection:
• Who have I believed Jesus to be?
• Have I shaped Jesus to my life, or am I willing to reshape my life around Him?
• Which truth about Jesus challenged me the most today?
(Do NOT rush this. Silence is healthy.)
SECTION 8: “I WILL” STATEMENT (5 minutes)
SECTION 8: “I WILL” STATEMENT (5 minutes)
READ ALOUD:
16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Explain:
This is not about fixing everything. It is about alignment with truth.
Invite them to write one “I will” sentence.
Examples:
• I will seek to know Jesus as He truly is, not as I want Him to be.
• I will acknowledge Jesus’ authority in one area of my life this week.
• I will spend time in Scripture asking God to reveal Jeus more clearly.
CLOSING PRAYER (READ OR PARAPHRASE)
CLOSING PRAYER (READ OR PARAPHRASE)
“Jesus, open our eyes to see You clearly. Remove any false images and incomplete understanding. Teach us to respond to You as Lord, not just admire You as Savior. Prepare our hearts to surrender fully to you. In Jesus name, Amen”
