Story: Two kinds of people at a game
Ones on the field
Ones in the stands
With Jesus, there are two kinds of people…
Ones who are doing
Ones who are watching
PRAY
John 2:1–10 NIV
1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
When there was a problem, Jesus’ mother knew where to go for the solution.
John 2:1–10 NIV
4 “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
Jesus told her it wasn’t time yet but mom wasn’t going to be denied. She ignored his answer, looked at the servants, and told them to get ready.
Mary knew that Jesus was about to do something incredible because an angel had told her that He would.
Mary knew the best advice she could ever give anyone was, “Just do whatever [Jesus] tells you."
John 2:1–10 NIV
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
These weren’t clean drinking glasses — they were used for washing…ritual cleaning.
John 2:1–10 NIV
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”;
"Fill the jars with water” - ie. “Go and get somewhere between 120-180 gallons of water (1000-1500 pounds), lug it in here and fill these jars. Just trust me…it’s gonna be awesome."
John 2:1–10 NIV
so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
The servants could’ve argued this point…and, honestly, they would’ve had a pretty good argument.
“But Jesus…he doesn’t want water…he wants wine."
“But Jesus…we’ve been serving him for a long time…this won’t please him."
“But Jesus…this doesn’t make sense."
“But Jesus…just let us do our job the way we know how to do it."
“But Jesus…"
But they didn’t argue. They recognized the predicament they were in and they jumped at Jesus’ directions.
John 2:1–10 NIV
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
People who don’t know Jesus wait for a miracle.
People who do know Jesus serve the miracle.
Everyone enjoyed the fruit of what was happening but only the servants experienced the moment.
The servants watched a cup of dirty water turn into wine in their hands and were amazed.
Are you putting yourself in a position to see the miracles happen?
Or are you waiting around and celebrating everyone else’s victories?
Stop settling for hearing a good story or reading a good book. It's time to get up, take the cup in your own two hands and ask Jesus to change your water. I guarantee that when you see what Jesus can do and will do through you, your life will never be the same.
But to see God’s power working through your hands, your hands have to be scooping the water. Your hands have to be answering the call.
There were really 2 different groups of people at that wedding...
There were the master and the guests, who enjoyed a great party and went home to sleep it off and wake up to a very ordinary tomorrow.
And there were the servants, who witnessed the miraculous and went home to dream and wake up to a very extra-ordinary tomorrow.
I want you to see the miracle… I want you to carry the cup… I want you to live as a disciple who serves.
How do you do that???
Listen to Jesus
You can’t obey if you can’t hear.
2. Say “yes”
Stop arguing. Start obeying.
3. Stop being comfortable
Jesus doesn’t want fans. He wants followers.
