Why is this good for us? (vs. 19-25)
It brings a better hope through which we draw near to God (vs. 19) - It gives us a way to be with God.
Knowing what we know of the book of Exodus, how might “Drawing near to God” sound in the ear of a Jew?
It means we can pray to him.
It means we can ask him for forgiveness.
It means there is no one who stands between us and God.
It comes with an oath! (vs. 21) - Certainty
Why is an oath good for us?
It guarantees a better covenant! (vs. 22) How is the New Covenant Better?
2 Corinthians 3
This priesthood is permanent. (vs. 24) We don’t need to worry about “Moses or Aaron Dying”
He is able to save forever! (vs. 25) Salvation isn’t temporary or partial. There’s no point where the doors to the temple are closed. Until the day that Christ returns we can point people to Him.
Why would we settle for anything less?
Why would anyone hold onto an earthly priesthood?
We know we can draw near to God ourselves. Why would anyone settle for another earthly priest?
This oath is given from God. Why would we settle for those appointed by men?
There’s a New and Better Covenant, why would anyone hold onto the Old Covenant, the Covenant of Moses.
4. A permanent priesthood!
Why might we settle for temporary and visible rather than invisible and forever?
Why would anyone cling to the Old Covenant?
How is Christ the Great High Priest greater than ordinary priests?
holy (vs.26)
innocent
undefiled
separated from sinners
exalted
no daily sacrifices
no offering for his own sins
He offered himself
He offered one sacrifice
He is a Son
He is Perfect
He is forever
He’s without sin
He offered one acceptable sacrifice
He’s God
What’s the significance of this sacrifice once for all? What does that mean for us today?
How might we try to become our own priests offering our own sacrifices?
