The King Over All
The King Over All
Colossians 1:15-18
Let me ask you this morning, How Big is your view of Jesus?
Its been a couple of weeks since we have been in the book of Colossians, but if you recall a few weeks back we were reminded that Those Who are walking worthy of the Lord, by the power of the Spirit, Live differently, Think Differently, Continue Differently, and Respond Differently. If you will remember, over and over we pointed to the foundation that made this true in the life of the believer.
Lets Read verses 13-14 as we remember.
Colossians 1:13–14 “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
Because of the Fact that God has delivered his children from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, because of the gospel, believers live differently, their lives bear fruit or proof of the work of the gospel.
You with me?
Well who is this Beloved Son? Remember the subtitle of this sermon series?
The Supremacy of King Jesus. This is where that subtitle comes from.
So let me ask you today,
How Big Is your View of Jesus?
Is He just a Sunday God, Wednesday God, when times get tough God?
Lets Read Verses 15-18.
Colossians 1:15–18 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”
Pray
Today we will see the glorious truth that Jesus is the King Over All.
Lets be clear, Jesus is not just King in some earthly sense.
Jesus is God. (v.15)
Jesus is King Over the Creation. (v. 16)
Jesus is King Over the Church. (v.18a)
Jesus is King Over All. (v.17,18b)
Look with me at verse 15.
Jesus is God (v.15)
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
God exists as Father, Son, & Holy Spirit.
One God in three persons.
Three equal, yet distinct persons, existing simultaneously yet distinctly.
We can’t see the Father, we can’t see the Spirit, but we have seen the Son.
Jesus is very God of very God, He is the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, who took on flesh and made the invisible God, visible.
Let’s read John 1:1–3, John 1:14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
This is what Paul means when He says that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, He is God in flesh.
How Big is your view of Jesus?
Jesus is the image of the invisible God, and the firstborn of all creation.
What does that phrase mean? Firstborn of all creation.
This is a text where those who would follow the false religion of Jehovahs Witness would point to Jesus not being God, but being a created being. The Bible teaches over and over that Jesus is the Son of God in flesh, and that the Son of God is equal to the Father, not less than.
This phrase firstborn of all creation, would be better translated firstborn over all creation. In other words, he is before and over all creation.
If He is the image of the invisible God, the God who was not created but has existed from eternity past, he is God.
Again the firstborn of all creation is to communicate that He is before creation, uncreated. We see in verse 16 that he created all things, therefore he wasnt created, but he is Creator.
This is what you and I need to understand from verse 15. The very one who redeemed us, who forgave us of our sins, for those of us who are his children, this very Redeemer, is God Himself.
Jesus is God. (v15)
Because Jesus God, he is Supreme, he is King Over All.
Jesus is King Over the Creation (16)
Look at verse 16.
Colossians 1:16 “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
All things were created by him and for him.
If you are struggling today with purpose, wondering why you exist, this is it.
All things were created through him and for him.
All means all and thats all all will ever mean.
Jesus is the King over Creation, because He is the One Who Created.
All things in heaven or on earth, visible and invisible, thrones, dominions, rulers authorities.
This is extensive.
Everything in heaven, Jesus created.
Everything on earth,
Jesus created.
Everything we see, Jesus Created.
Things we cant see, Spiritual realities, all things, Jesus created.
Rulers, authorities, even the domain of darkness that Jesus delivered us from, was created by him. All things, were created by Him and for Him.
All things were created by Jesus, and for Jesus.
Lets get practical.
You will never be satisfied, until you submit your life to King Jesus.
There is no created thing, which by the way includes everything but God.
Every single thing that exists, exists because God created it.
Maybe youre thinking, wait, evil, sin, etc.
We wont dive into that in this text, but suffice it to say that God is not the author of sin.
But He did create all things, he created the humans that rebelled against him(us), he created the angels that rebelled against him. (Satan, demons)
God created all things.
He is the reason for your existence.
Let me be clear, if you are not a born again believer in Jesus today, if you are not trusting in Jesus Alone, you will never find the satisfaction, purpose, and hope you are craving, until you surrender to Him.
And in his grace, when you and I surrender to Him, to live for his glory alone, we find the rest our restless hearts were seeking everywhere else.
Also, think of this, if you are a child of God, there is nothing that can touch your life that is not under his Lordship.
He is the King Over all creation.
No suffering, no persecution, no sickness, no troubles, are greater than the one who is over it all.
What a comfort for us?
Jesus is the King over The Creation.
How Big is your view of Jesus?
Not only is Jesus King Over The Creation, he is King Over the Church.
Colossians 1:18a “And he is the head of the body, the church.
Jesus is the Head of the body, the Church.
If you cut off the head, the body dies.
Jesus is the Head, of the body, that is the church.
Paul picks up this imagery of the church being the body over and over in many of his writings.
We are the hands and feet of Jesus, the church is the physical representation of Christ, since His Ascension, to the world around us.
Jesus is King over the Church.
We exist for him, and for his glory.
Thats why our mission is to make disciples for the glory of God.
Because thats the mission our King gave us in Matthew 28 and elsewhere.
Jesus is King Over The Church, and He is a Good and Gracious King.
Also, if Jesus is King Over the Church, and he redeemed the Church, whose hands are we resting in as a church?
Who holds our future?
Who holds our days?
We want to use all the tools that God has given us to engage people, and make disicples for His glory.
But the existence of this church doesnt ultimately depend on us, but the one who is the head, King Jesus.
Our responsibility is to submit to him, and to seek him in all things, and trust His Kingship.
What a blessing, that One who redeemed us, would be our Head, and we his body.
How Big is your view of Jesus?
Jesus is God, Jesus is King Over the creation, Jesus is King over the Church, and to put an exclamation mark on this all, Jesus is King Over All! (v.17,18b)
Colossians 1:17 “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Colossians 1:18b He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.”
Jesus is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
He is the uncreated Creator that holds all things together.
He is over death, he holds our resurrection to eternal life, and in everything he is preeminent!
How Big is your view of Jesus?
He holds all things together, he is before all things, he is preeminent!
Preeminent, means he is first. He has first place in everything.
First in power, first in glory first, first in majesty, first in honor, first over creation, first over the church, but let me ask you today,
Is He first in your life?
Is Jesus first place in your life?
He is the King Over All!
Let me ask you today, is He Your King?
How Big is Your View of Jesus?
