Does everyone know who Oprah is?
When she had her thousandth episode or 20th anniversary or something, she did something crazy. Several of you have probably seen or at least heard the meme that this created…
“EVERYBODY GETS A CARRRRR!!!”
The Holy Spirit says, “EVERYBODY GETS A GIIIIIIIIIFT!!!”
There’s a bunch here, more than we have time or I have understanding to fully get into!
notes in Bible
I don’t know spiritual gift you have. You may even have multiple! But, if you are a Christian, you have the Holy Spirit.
Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
And if you have the Holy Spirit then you have been given a spiritual gift!
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
It’s up to you to find out what your gift is and how you can use it for “the common good” of the church, particularly your church.
There’s no set, sure-fire way to find out what your spiritual gift is. Honestly, in studying for this I think I may have been misunderstanding spiritual gifts! I may have been teaching y’all wrong in Membership Matters! But here’s what I am confident about; you won’t find out what your spiritual gift is if you aren’t serving and ministering to others in and through the body of Christ! I think to find out, you’ve got to just get out there and see what comes up!
When you start to play basketball you don’t know what you’re good at until you get out there and start doing stuff… I’m good at cheering other people on!
You have a gift and you have been instructed by God to use it for the common good! If you aren’t, then the body is crippled!
Christians make a church.
Christians make a church.
Paul tells us that each of us is a part of the body of Christ and if we are missing then the body is handicapped.

grab two people, give one a dodgeball and tell the other that their eyes have decided they want to be ears instead and blindfold them, then let the first person throw the dodgeball
If someone decides they don’t want to be a part of the body, or that they don’t like their spiritual gift and want another, then the body is missing something!
Don’t think of yourself too highly because of your gift. Don’t think too little of another because of their spiritual gift.
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
We are all members of the one body of Christ, arranged and gifted just like God decided.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
So be content and use the gifts He has given you! Be grateful for others who have the gifts you don’t so they can do the things for the body that you can’t! Each believer and their gifts are needed in the body.

This second list of gifts repeats some of the previous ones, has some new ones, and leaves some out. There’s another list in Romans 12 that does the same thing. I don’t know that all the spiritual gifts are listed in the Bible! But I know every believer has at least one and we all need to be exercising them for the common good of the body of Christ!
I think this kind of unity that Paul describes is a radical idea in our world today! There is so much disunity. Our country went to two different sides fighting over the Super Bowl half time show this weekend!
Jesus has something better for us, the unity that comes to all people through the Gospel…
present the Gospel!
