The Holy Spirit: Our Helper in the Fight
The Holy Spirit: Our Helper in the Fight
OPENING QUESTION (Hook – 3–5 minutes)
OPENING QUESTION (Hook – 3–5 minutes)
Ask:
Have you ever had someone warn you about something… and later realized they were right?
Let a few students share.
Say:
Sometimes we don’t like being corrected. Sometimes we don’t like being told we’re wrong. But what if the person correcting us actually loves us? What if they’re trying to help us?
Today we’re going to see that the Holy Spirit does exactly that.
PART 1: THE SPIRIT CONVICTS US

Ask:
What does Jesus say the Holy Spirit will do?
(Allow answers.)
Leader Explanation:
Leader Explanation:
Jesus says the Spirit will:
Convict the world concerning sin
Show us righteousness
Show us judgment
Let’s define a word.
Ask:
Ask:
What does “conviction” mean?
(Allow discussion.)
Teach:
Teach:
Conviction means:
The Spirit shows us that we are sinners and that we need Jesus.
Conviction is not just feeling bad.
What’s the difference between conviction and shame?
conviction Is realizing:
“That was wrong.”
“That dishonors God.”
“I need forgiveness.”
“I need something better.”

Movie Illustration #1: Spider-Man (2002)
Think about Uncle Ben telling Peter Parker:
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
Peter ignores that wisdom. Later, when Uncle Ben dies because Peter didn’t act, Peter feels deep conviction.
That conviction:
Hurt.
Was uncomfortable.
Changed him.
Conviction led Peter to become Spider-Man for good.
In a much greater way, the Holy Spirit shows us when we’re wrong — not to crush us — but to change us.
Think about King David in Psalm 51
Ask:
Ask:
Does anyone enjoy being convicted?
(They’ll say no.)
Exactly. It’s uncomfortable.
But here’s the truth:
Conviction is proof that the Spirit is working in you.
If you never feel conviction over sin, that’s actually more concerning.
Application Questions (With Sample Answers)
Application Questions (With Sample Answers)
Can you think of a time someone called you out on something?
Sample answer: “My parents corrected me for lying.”
Follow-up: Did it help you grow?
What is your first reaction when you realize you sinned?
Possible answers:
Defensive
Embarrassed
Blaming others
Quiet and guilty
What should our response be instead?
Admit it.
Confess it.
Thank God for showing it.
Ask for help to change.
Teach this clearly:
Conviction is not punishment.
Conviction is God rescuing you from yourself.

What does Jesus say the Spirit will do here?

Leader Explanation:
Leader Explanation:
The Spirit:
Guides us into truth.
Does not speak on His own authority.
Glorifies Jesus.
Takes what belongs to Christ and gives it to us.
This means:
When you read the Bible…
The Holy Spirit helps you understand it.
Illustration: Telescope
Illustration: Telescope
The Bible is like the stars in the sky.
They are already there.
a telescope.
He helps you see clearly what was already true.
Without the Spirit:
We misunderstand.
We twist scripture.
We make it about ourselves.
With the Spirit:
We see Christ.
We see truth.
We grow.
Ask:
Ask:
Why is it important that the Spirit does not speak on His own authority?
Teach:
Teach:
Because it shows the Trinity working together.
The Father plans.
The Son accomplishes.
The Spirit applies.
The Spirit will NEVER:
Contradict Scripture.
Lead you away from Christ.
Tell you something opposite of the Bible.
If someone says:
“God told me this,”
but it contradicts Scripture —
that is not the Holy Spirit.
Application Questions (With Sample Answers)
Application Questions (With Sample Answers)
What should you do when you read the Bible and don’t understand it?
Pray.
Ask the Spirit for help.
Ask a mature Christian.
Keep reading patiently.
How do we know the Spirit is guiding us and not just our feelings?
It aligns with Scripture.
It points to Jesus.
It produces humility, not pride.
PART 3: THE SPIRIT HELPS US FIGHT SIN
PART 3: THE SPIRIT HELPS US FIGHT SIN

Talk about: Galatians 5:16–17
Teach:
Teach:
We are told to:
“Walk by the Spirit.”
That means:
Live depending on Him.
This passage tells us:
The flesh wants sin.
The Spirit opposes sin.
There is a battle inside believers.
If you feel that battle —
that’s actually evidence you belong to Christ.
Unbelievers don’t fight sin.
Believers struggle against it.
Important Clarification:
Important Clarification:
Walking by the Spirit does NOT mean:
You’ll never sin.
It means:
You won’t live comfortably in sin.
3 Kinds of men by C.S Lewis
There are three kinds of people in the world.
First, there are people who live mainly for themselves.
They do what makes them happy. They see other people and even the world as things to use to get what they want. At the center of their life is one question: “What do I want?”
Second, there are people who know they shouldn’t live only for themselves.
They believe in God, or at least in right and wrong. They try to be good. They try to obey. But they treat obedience like paying a bill.
It’s like saying,
“Okay God, I’ll give you what you require… but I still want the rest of my life for me.”
So their life is split in two:
Part of it belongs to God.
Part of it belongs to themselves.
They’re always balancing:
“My will” vs. “God’s will.”
If they don’t obey, they feel utterly guilty.
If they do obey, they sometimes feel like they’re missing out.
They never feel fully free.
Third, there are people who stop trying to balance the two.
Instead of dividing their life between themselves and God, they give the whole thing to Him.
They can honestly say, like the apostle Paul,
“For me, to live is Christ.”
This doesn’t mean they lose their personality.
It means their heart changes.
Instead of constantly fighting God’s will, they begin to want what He wants.
It’s not “God vs. me” anymore.
Their life belongs to Christ — and that’s where they find real freedom.
Some people live for themselves.
Some people try to balance themselves and God.
Some people surrender their whole life to Christ — and that’s where real joy is found.
