A Father Who Sends
A Father Who Sends
As we close out our series on the Father’s Heart, we are looking at A Father Who Sends
Our main text this morning is going to be in John 17:13-21
But we are going to look at a number of different text this morning as we talk about A Father Who Sends.
Our earthly father’s send us to get milk from the store, or they send us to our rooms to clean them up.
The Heavenly Father sends His children to change the trajectory of eternity.
Changing the trajectory of eternity is a promotion, not a chore.
Look with me at our main text this morning John 17:13-21
13 “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.
14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.
16 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
19 “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;
21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
This is Jesus’ prayer for the disciples, that is you and me.
We can say that God the Father is the original sender.
Before we get into our message lets pray
1. Not of the World
1. Not of the World
13 “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.
14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.
Here Jesus is praying to God the Father for His followers, that is His disciples.
Jesus begins with saying that He speaks these things in the world
That is the teachings that He has taught during His time on earth.
The purpose for the teachings is that we may have His joy mad full in us.
Then Jesus states that He has given His followers God the Father’s word.
We have the Word of God with us today.
We see that the when we are fully surrendered and following Jesus that the world will hate us.
The world hates us because we are different, because we are not of the world, just as Jesus is not of the world.
Jesus continues His prayer to the Father stating that He does not want us taken out of the world, but He wants us protected from the evil one, which is satan.
2. Set Apart to be Sent
2. Set Apart to be Sent
16 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
Jesus once again mentions that we are not of the world.
As His followers we are not to be of the world.
Jesus asks the Father to sanctify us, which means to set apart.
We are to look different, act different and live different then the world
God the Father sent Jesus into the world, and then Jesus sent His followers into the world.
The Heavenly Father sends His children to change the trajectory of eternity.
Changing the trajectory of eternity is a promotion, not a chore.
3. So the World may Believe
3. So the World may Believe
19 “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;
21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
Jesus states that He has been sanctified, that is again set apart, and He was sanctified for us.
We are to be sanctified, set apart in truth.
Ultimate truth is the Word of God.
Jesus at the time of the prayer was praying for the disciples, the followers that were with Him.
But He says also for those who believe in Him through the word of the disciples.
That is us, we have believed because the original disciples went into the world and shared the truth, the gospel message.
Then He prays that His followers would be one even as Jesus, God the Father are one.
That is we are to be in unity with other believers.
Have you ever wondered why Christianity does not spread more powerfully in the world today?
I am going to say because we as followers of Jesus are not in unity.
Many churches are not in unity just in that local church, but then we have so many dividing walls among Christians today.
There is all the different denominations
But also we must ask as we close, How do we be in the world and not of the world.
