“Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.” – Psalm 119:18
What’s the end goal of this verse? (see wondrous things from God’s law)
Before we get to that goal, what needs to happen? (Eyes need to be opened!)
What does that tell us about our eyes? (They are naturally closed, we need the Lord’s help to have eyes to see the truth)
We need to be reading our Bibles observatively!
Dazed while reading...

I’m going to read this short story, and you answer these true or false questions with me.
Dry Ice
Can you imagine ice that does not melt and is not wet? The you can imagine dry ice. Dry ice is made by a freezing gas called carbon dioxide. Dry ice is quite different from ordinary ice, which is simply frozen water.
Dry ice was first manufactured in 1925. It has since fulfilled the fondest hopes of its inventor. It can be used for making artificial fog in movies (when steam is passed over dry ice, a very dense vapor rises), and for destroying insects in grain supplies. It is more practical than ordinary ice because it takes up less space and is 142 degrees colder. Since it evaporates instead of melting, it is cleaner to use. For these reasons it is extremely popular, and many people prefer it to ordinary ice.
Dry ice is so cold that, if you touch it with your bare fingers, it will burn you!
1. Dry ice is made from water, but because it is specially treated it does not melt. T or F
2. The first dry ice was manufactured in the 1950’s. T or F
3. Dry ice has more uses than ordinary ice. T or F
4. Dry ice is not as cold as ordinary ice. T or F
5. Artificial fog can be made by passing steam over dry ice. T or F
Let’s Start with a Verse
Let’s Start with a Verse
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Remember, the goal here is, “What do I see?”
Start With Terms
Start With Terms
Key Words: But
The word “but” shows us contrast, there’s a change in direction...
What does the word “But” force us to do? (Look at what came before; context)
ALWAYS LOOK FOR CONTEXT! So, let’s jump back to vs. 1
1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
Starts off telling us of a former account. Bible scholars, what was Luke’s “former account”? (Gospel of Luke)
Observations
Written by Luke
Serves as a pt. 2 (Luke gets things started, Acts continues on the story)
Who was Luke? (Physician, writer, follower of Jesus, accompanied Paul in missionary journeys)
Then, we discover that this was written to someone, who was it written to? (Theophilus)
Taking a look at Luke 1:3, tell me, who is Theophilus? (Someone of importance, “most excellent Theophilus”)
But back here in Acts 1, he only calls him “Theophilus”
Why do you think that is different? (Familiarity? Lost his position because he became a believer?)
We’ve discovered a whole lot already, and we’re only through one word in our verse!
Jump to vs. 6, and we’ll discover that Acts begins with a discussion...
What’s their question to Jesus? (Is this time for your Kingdom?)
Here’s Jesus’ answer (vs. 7-8), there’s a negative and a positive response...
7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.
Is this negative or positive? (Negative, “It is not for you to know”)
Vs. 8 is where we get our positive, “But”
Let’s take a second and use our sanctified imagination here...
Based on vs. 9, what is happening right now? (Jesus ascends to heaven)
So, that means vs. 8 are Jesus’ last words on earth in His 1st coming. These are the marching orders, “I’m leaving now, so this is what I want you to do...
Who are the People Involved?
Who are the People Involved?
Who is involved? the apostles
There’s another important word in the verse, it comes right after “But”, what is it? (you)
Who is “you”? Who was Jesus talking to here? (The disciples)
What do we know about them?
Tell me, what do we know about the disciples?
Mostly Fishermen
Jews
Followed Jesus for over 3 1/2 years
Jesus chose them
Witnessed many miracles
Witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion
Plenty of emotions right now
They have lot’s on their minds, and now they have the opportunity to ask Jesus the burning questions on their minds...
Main Verb: shall receive
What’s the main verb in this verse? (shall receive)
What tense is that verb? (future)
What will they receive? power
What kind of power do you think this is? Superman strength? (The word actually means “ability”, God will give them the ability to accomplish their task)
There’s a task to be done, which they don’t have the power to do it now, but they will have it soon...
Cause-Effect Relationships
Cause-Effect Relationships
Next, va. 8 says, “When the Holy Spirit has come upon you;” What does that add to this verse?
Are the apostles going to receive power without the Holy Spirit? (No, this needs to come first, they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon them)
Who is the Holy Spirit?
God
Third Person of the Trinity
The Comforter
The giver of power/ability in this verse
Up to this point, the disciples lived in their own power, how did that go for them? (Peter denied Christ and the rest fled (except John)!)
We are weak on our own, we are not able to fulfill God’s plan for us without Him enabling us.
Check out the important wording here, “when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;”
What does that tell us about the power? (Not from the apostles, comes from God)
After this power comes upon the apostles, what are they going to be? (My (Christ’s) witnesses)
Define the Terms
Define the Terms
What’s a witness? (Someone who has seen/experienced something)
Witness to the crime, “I saw him do it!”
What did the apostles witness in their lives?
So far, we’ve noticed all sorts of details in this passage. Now, we turn to the location..
Where will this be? Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the end of the earth
What do we know about Jerusalem?
Big city
Temple is there, centre of Jewish worship
Where Jesus died
Apostle’s present location
Was going to become home base for Christianity
Judea
Comparison: City to province
- What province is Saint John located in? New Brunswick...
Samaria
Ough! What do we know about Samaria?
To the end of the earth
What does Jesus mean by “the end of the earth.”? Is He saying the earth is flat and we need to bring the Gospel to the very edge of it? (Bring the Gospel to every inhabited area of the world)
Conclusion
Conclusion
Little did you know, we just observed over 50 things just in Acts 1:8! There’s a whole lot of power in observation!
