Introduction
Review
Matthew 5:27–28 ESV
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
(27) Jesus simply quotes the OT law - “You shall not commit adultry”
Seventh commandment (of the 10)
Remember, Jesus is criticizing the righteousness of the scribes and pharisees in this passage
At this time, the 7th commandment was viewed simply as wrong because it was theft, not because it was a sin against your spouse.
The scribes and Pharisees viewed adultery as sin against either the husband or father of the woman, not only taking what was their’s, but ruining the value of their property as well.
If the woman was not yet married, the father was out a substantial financial sum...
If the woman was married, the husband would lose his wife, who cared for his children and household
(28) Jesus says that they missed the point
Instead, the law had to do with the lustfulness of the one committing adultery.
Introduce FIRST point

I. The law of Christ demands unusual faithfulness (27-30)

This is so applicable in our world today.
ex. pornography, tinder, escort services
Does it have to be sexual desire
Have you ever said, “I wish my wife would just be like her, she takes care of the family money so much better”
or, “I wish my husband would be more like him, he has such a better job”
I think this can be applied to emotional unfaithfulness as well, not even just limited to lust.
Matthew 5:29–30 ESV
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
(29-30) The solution - be unusually faithful
Jesus points out what sounds like a crazy exaggeration.
It is better to cut of your hand or gouge out your eye than to let them lead you to sin.
The truth is, Jesus is right, if you can do anything to get over your sin and turn to christ, than do it. It is not worth holding on to the pleasures of sin and sacrifice your soul.
What if I’m not married?
What if I struggle?
Avoid places of temptation
The mall, the beach?
Avoid temptations
Filter your internet
Don’t have a smart phone
Get accountability
We all sin
Yes, there is shame in sin but not amongst your brothers and sisters in Christ
Introduce next verse
Matthew 5:31–32 ESV
31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
This point is clearly related to the previous
(31) “It was also said” is the shortest of Jesus introductions.
Just as it is adultery to lust, so it is adultery to divorce.
The Law that Jesus was pointing to in Deuteronomy 24 is making the point that divorce is not something to rush into, at least that is how the Scribes and Pharisees took it.
Introduce verse in Matt. 19. Note reason divorce was allowed/
Matthew 19:8 ESV
8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
Jesus makes it clear that, because divorce lead to adultery, only adultery releases someone to divorce.
Introduce point 2

II. The law of Christ demands unwavering commitment (31-32)

This means that we must be commited to our spouse
This means that we must maintain purity
Introduce next verses
Matthew 5:33–37 ESV
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
This passage is again, tied to the last.
It expands the previous teaching beyond the marriage promise to all one’s promises.

Introduce point 2

III. The law of Christ demands absolute honesty (33-37)

Introduce verse
Matthew 5:48 ESV
48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
What man can keep this law?
Not me, not you
Jesus Christ

IV. The law of Christ can only be kept in Christ (48)
