This past Sunday we continued our Core Values series by focusing on what it means to be a Bible-Driven church. After establishing last week that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, we asked a foundational question: How do we know that with certainty?
The answer is Scripture alone.
We were reminded that the Bible is not simply a helpful resource or one authority among many. It is the final, sufficient, and decisive authority for what we believe about God, salvation, and the church. God’s Word is not unfinished, insufficient, or awaiting updates. Because Scripture is breathed out by God, it carries His truthfulness, reliability, and authority.
We considered the importance of reading the Bible faithfully — not cherry-picking verses, but understanding words, sentences, context, and the larger story of Scripture. Without a growing knowledge of God’s Word, believers become vulnerable to teaching that may sound biblical yet subtly distorts the truth. What is partially true can easily be mistaken for what is entirely true, which is why discernment requires deep familiarity with Scripture.
God’s Word, the Bible, is an anchor for your soul in a world drifting ever-increasingly towards godlessness.
From 2 Timothy 3:16–4:5, we saw three central truths:
Scripture Alone is our truth. God’s Word is living, active, and purposeful — teaching, correcting, and shaping believers into spiritual maturity. It functions as a lamp in a dark world, providing clarity and direction that our emotions and experiences cannot reliably supply.
Scripture Alone defines our mission. The church’s calling is not innovation or entertainment, but faithfulness. We are commanded to preach the Word, because faith, salvation, and spiritual growth are rooted in God’s revealed truth, not human wisdom or methodology.
Scripture Alone governs our calling. We are to proclaim God’s Word in season and out of season — whether welcomed or resisted. The goal of preaching is not comfort or popularity, but obedience. The Word of God does not exist to affirm our preferences but to transform our lives.
Ultimately, the message pressed us toward a sobering reality: the greatest struggle is rarely understanding Scripture, but surrendering to it. We are not transformed by the parts of the Bible we admire, but by the parts we obey. Hearing without responding is not neutrality — it is disobedience.
Questions:
What’s one thing from Sunday’s message that stuck with you — good or bad?
In real life, what competes with Scripture for authority?
What parts of the Bible do people today tend to ignore, soften, or avoid?
What excuses sound reasonable but quietly keep us from Scripture?
Why is delayed obedience so common for believers?
If you have your Bible, and I hope you do, go ahead and turn with me to 2 Timothy 3. We will read through chapter 4, verse 5. This passage will guide our time together tonight as we pray.
Before we begin praying, let’s take a moment to settle our hearts.
Prayer is not a transition between parts of a service. Prayer is the work of the church. It is how we consciously place ourselves before the Lord — listening, confessing, depending, and asking.
Paul’s words to Timothy help anchor us here. They remind us what God has given us, what God expects of us, and what kind of people we are called to be.
Let’s move through our time of prayer using four movements: upward, downward, inward, and outward.

DOWNWARD — Receiving God’s Revelation

2 Timothy 3:16–17 [READ]
“…profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete…”
Now we let God’s Word speak down into our lives.
Scripture is not merely to be admired.
It teaches us.
It corrects us.
It exposes what is wrong and trains what is right.
God’s Word is active in shaping His people.

OUT-LOUD REVELATION PRAYERS

One sentence only. Begin with:
“God, I see that You…”
Examples:
“God, I see that You are committed to shaping my life…” “God, I see that You correct those You love…” “God, I see that You are forming us through Your Word…”
[ALLOW 4–6 PEOPLE TO PRAY OUT LOUD]
Close:
Lord, help us receive Your Word with humility and trust.

INWARD — Confession & Surrender

Church, if Scripture corrects and trains us, then honesty before God is necessary.
There are areas of resistance.
There are patterns we excuse.
There are truths we hear but struggle to obey.

SILENT CONFESSION

(Together, quietly)
Take a quiet moment.
Ask the Lord silently:
“Where am I resisting Your Word?” “Where do I need correction?” “Where do I need growth?”
[HOLD 60–90 SECONDS OF SILENCE]

OUT-LOUD SURRENDER PRAYERS

If the Spirit prompts you, pray one sentence:
“Lord, help me submit to Your truth…” “Lord, soften my heart…” “Lord, shape me through Your Word…”
Close:
Jesus, thank You that correction is an expression of Your grace, not rejection.

OUTWARD — Praying Forward in Circles

2 Timothy 4:1–2 [READ]
“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season…”
Church, this passage reminds us that faithfulness is not passive.
We are called to steadiness.
To endurance.
To clarity.
Tonight, we pray outward in three circles.

CIRCLE 1 — Pray for People in the Room & Their Families

Pray short, gentle prayers for:
Strength Endurance Wisdom Peace Faithfulness
[ALLOW POPCORN-STYLE PRAYER — ~6 MINUTES]
Close:
Lord, sustain Your people. Strengthen weary hearts.

CIRCLE 2 — Pray for Those on the Prayer Request List

Lift before the Lord those facing:
Illness Grief Uncertainty Decisions Ongoing burdens
Pray simply and clearly.
[ALLOW TIME FOR INTERCESSION]
Close:
Jesus, You are sovereign over every situation. Be near to those in need. Make Your presence known.

CIRCLE 3 — Pray for Our Church’s Faithfulness

We’re praying for:
Faithful teaching Doctrinal clarity Spiritual maturity Endurance in truth Courage in ministry
Examples:
“Lord, keep Cedar Bay grounded in Scripture…” “Lord, help us remain faithful in every season…” “Lord, guard our church from error…”
[ALLOW 4–6 PEOPLE TO PRAY OUT LOUD]
Close:
Lord, help us remain steady, anchored, and faithful to Your Word.

THANKSGIVING — Ending in Gratitude

Church, we end with gratitude.
Because growth, endurance, and faithfulness are all gifts of grace.

OUT-LOUD THANKSGIVING PRAYERS

One sentence:
“Lord, thank You for Your Word…” “Lord, thank You for Your patience with me…” “Lord, thank You for sustaining our church…”
[ALLOW 6–8 PEOPLE TO PRAY OUT LOUD]

Final Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of Scripture. Thank You that You teach, correct, and train Your people through Your Word. Thank You that You do not leave us unchanged, but continue shaping us by grace. Strengthen us to remain faithful in every season. Guard this church in truth. Sustain those who are weary. And help us endure with clarity, conviction, and humility.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
