Unbelief In Nazareth

Jesus returns to the His own country of the area of Nazareth in the Synagogue teaching. Remember Jesus started His preaching in the Synagogue in Capernaum Mark 1:21-22 and those who heard were amazed at His Teaching, He taught as one that had authority .

Also in Mark3:1-4 when He entered the synagogue and healed the man with a withered Hand.

This will be the 2nd time Jesus will have visited his home town they had rejected Him once Luke 4:16-30 and now Jesus will give them opportunity again to believe.

So Jesus spent a lot of time teaching and preaching about the Kingdom of God.

6 :1Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.

2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!

In The First 2 verses what did the people recognize about Jesus?

He taught with Authority

The were amazed at His wisdom and Miracles.

Jesus was not like other teachers that they have heard.

3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.

Jesus was a carpenter Trade: Like

Joseph Jesus was a carpenter by trade . Jesus was taught the trade by his stepfather , In Jesus early year in 6 A.D Joseph probably helped build the “Sepphoris “ it was a major archeological site in lower Galilee . Then a Galilee capital and most prominent city, this city ,had been destroyed by the Romans and Rebuilding Had begun Immediately. Thus carpentry was (mostly worked in Wood), like stone masons were no doubt in demand in Nazareth. Son of Mary, Brother and Sisters:

The Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?”

Calling Jesus the son of Mary was a dig at Jesus, men were usually offered with the fathers name and not the mothers. It was contrary to Jewish Usage to describe a man as a son to his mother, even when she was widow, except in insulting Terms . We also must remember that their were probably some who still believed That Jesus was illegitimate because many thought He was born of Fornication. But we know according to Luke 1:34–35 “And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.” Brothers and Sisters: Some believe that Jesus had no brothers or sister ,but if we study the word “brothers” which is “adephos” in the greek meaning (the womb)a brother literally or Figuratively. In Romans 16:11 “Greet my kinsman Herodion. Greet those in the Lord who belong to the family of Narcissus. The word used hear is “kinsman “ syngenes” meaning a relative (by blood);by extension, a fellow country men In Galatians 1:19 it reads Galatians 1:19 “But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother.” Here again we see the word “brother “ “adephos “ from the womb or brother. so according to the scripture Jesus did have biological half brothers and sister showing that Jesus mother had other Children. 6:3 So they were offended by Him. Offended or The Greek word for Skandalizo or scandalized means to stumbled or tripped up or fall away. Jesus being the messiah the Son of God, Moses and the prophets spoke of Him as the coming one The King of Israel He Did miracles and He was the one who had come to save His people from their sins and claimed to be the son of God but as we have been reading through mark many were offended by Him . In the book of Isaiah it was prophesied That Jesus would be a stumbling block to many. In the book of Isaiah 8:14 “And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” God is a sanctuary for those who believe and a stone of stumbling for unbelievers. God is a sanctuary: Those who believe in the Son of God, God has become our sanctuary our protector and provider. That's an encouragement for me and for you. He has made us a Holy People by faith in His son, we have become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Luke 20:17–18 “But he looked directly at them and said, “What then is this that is written: “ ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’? Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him. Though Christ will be rejected It will not stop God from making Him the center work of Salvation. Jesus is the stone anyone who comes against the stone will be destroyed. The statement here is similar to a late Jewish proverb “If the stone falls on the pot, Alas for the pot, If the pot falls on the stone alas the pot”. and in 1 Peter 2:7–8 “So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.”

Like in Jesus day their are many today who stumble or take offense of Jesus and His gospel:

(Give example) sharing the gospel to friend or relative?

Was their ever a time when you tried to share with friends or family and were rejected?

They didn't receive it because they grew up with you and seen how you were before you were a christian.

Ask someone to share a time.

In the same way Jesus was rejected by His brothers we also will be rejected at times.

They are many today who believe that Jesus lived at a certain time period and even believed He was a prophet ,a good teacher ,but yet they stumble at Jesus being the Savior of the world ,the son of God, the Messiah.

Muslims believe Jesus was a prophet

Buddhism believe that he was a good teacher.
