John seems to be writing to combat early versions of heresy popping up in a church. Likely the early hints of docetism.
The belief that matter is evil and so Jesus only appeared to be incarnated but was actually just spirit because if he had been matter he would have been imperfect.
They cant distinguish dark from light.
