INTRO

WE’VE SAID IN THIS SERIES THAT HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS START WITH A HEALTHY HEART. AND WE’VE SAID LOVE ISN’T JUST SOMETHING YOU FEEL, IT’S SOMETHING THAT SHOWS UP.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN LOVE SHOWS UP…AND CONFLICT SHOWS UP TOO?
BECAUSE NO RELATIONSHIP IS CONFLICT-FREE.
MARRIAGE ISN’T. FRIENDSHIPS AREN’T. CHURCH ISN’T.
THE QUESTION ISN’T, “WILL WE HAVE CONFLICT?”
THE QUESTION IS, “WHAT WILL WE DO WITH IT?”
BECAUSE CONFLICT DOESN’T HAVE TO DIVIDE, IT CAN DEEPEN.

MAIN IDEA

CONFLICT DOESN’T HAVE TO DIVIDE, IT CAN DEEPEN WHEN WE HANDLE IT WITH GRACE AND HUMILITY.

1. PRIORITIZE PEACEFUL PARTNERSHIP

Matthew 5:23–24 NLT
“So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.
JESUS IS TEACHING THAT RECONCILIATION TAKES PRIORITY OVER PERFORMANCE.

A. RECONCILIATION IS URGENT.

Romans 12:18 NLT
Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.
DON’T DELAY WHAT GOD CALLS YOU TO REPAIR.
AVOIDANCE PROLONGS WHAT OBEDIENCE COULD HEAL.
PEACE RARELY HAPPENS ACCIDENTALLY, IT HAPPENS INTENTIONALLY.

B. WORSHIP AND RELATIONSHIPS ARE CONNECTED

1 John 4:20 NLT
If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?
YOU CAN’T SEPARATE VERTICAL DEVOTION FROM HORIZONTAL RECONCILIATION.
GOD CARES HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE.
SPIRITUAL MATURITY SHOWS UP IN RELATIONAL HEALTH.

C. SOMEONE HAS TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP

Matthew 18:15 NLT
“If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back.
PRIDE WAITS, HUMILITY MOVES.
GOING FIRST DOESN’T MEAN YOU’RE WRONG; IT MEANS YOU’RE MATURE.
PEACE BEGINS WITH RESPONSIBILITY, NOT RETALIATION.

2. EMBRACE HUMILITY AND HARMONY

Ephesians 4:2–3 NLT
Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.
CONNECTION GROWS WHERE HUMILITY LIVES.
A. HUMILITY LOWERS THE TEMPERATURE.
James 1:19–20 NLT
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.
YOU CAN’T FIGHT AND LISTEN AT THE SAME TIME.
PRIDE ESCALATES, HUMILITY DIFFUSES.
BEING RIGHT ISN’T THE SAME AS BEING RIGHTEOUS.
B. GENTLENESS STRENGTHENS RELATIONSHIPS.
Proverbs 15:1 NLT
A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.
A HARSH TONE CAN UNDO A HEALTHY INTENTION.
STRONG PEOPLE DON’T NEED TO BE LOUD.
A GENTLE ANSWER TURNS AWAY WRATH.
C. UNITY REQUIRES EFFORT.
Colossians 3:13 NLT
Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.
UNITY IS MAINTAINED.
PEACE IS PRESERVED BY INTENTIONALITY.
CONNECTION IS PROTECTED BY GRACE.

3. AMBASSADORS OF RECONCILIATION

2 Corinthians 5:18–19 NLT
And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.
WE DON’T JUST RECEIVE RECONCILIATION, WE REPRESENT IT.
Romans 5:10 NLT
For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.
A. WE’VE BEEN RECONCILED TO RECONCILE.
YOU CAN’T GIVE WHAT YOU HAVEN’T RECEIVED.
THE GOSPEL IS A BRIDGE STORY.
WE ARE MOST LIKE JESUS WHEN WE MOVE TOWARD PEACE.
B. WE REPRESENT CHRIST IN CONFLICT.
John 13:35 NLT
Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
EVERY DISAGREEMENT IS A WITNESS OPPORTUNITY.
THE WAY YOU HANDLE TENSION REFLECTS YOUR FAITH.
GRACE UNDER PRESSURE POINTS PEOPLE TO JESUS.
C. THE CROSS IS OUR MODEL.
JESUS DIDN’T AVOID THE CONFLICT OF OUR SIN, HE ABSORBED IT.
HE BUILT A BRIDGE WE COULD NEVER BUILD OURSELVES.
RECONCILIATION ALWAYS COSTS SOMETHING.
Ephesians 2:14–16 NLT
For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.

CONCLUSION/CLOSE

HERE’S THE TRUTH:
EVERY ONE OF US HAS BEEN ON THE WRONG SIDE OF CONFLICT.
WE’VE SAID THINGS WE REGRET.
WE’VE HELD GRUDGES.
WE’VE LET PRIDE WIN.
BUT THE GREATEST ACT OF RECONCILIATION IN HISTORY WASN’T BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE
IT WAS BETWEEN GOD AND US.
2 CORINTHIANS 5 says God reconciled us to himself through christ.
WE WERE SEPARATED BY SIN
INSTEAD OF WALKING AWAY, GOD BUILT A BRIDGE.
THE BRIDGE WAS THE CROST
And today, maybe the conflict you need resolved most isn’t horizontal — it’s vertical.
Maybe you’ve been distant from God.
Maybe pride, sin, or pain has created separation.
But just like we’re called to move toward others — God already moved toward you.

CLOSE

Conflict doesn’t have to divide — it can deepen.
And the deepest reconciliation available isn’t just between you and someone else.
It’s between you and God.
The same Jesus who calls you to build bridges with others
has already built one toward you.
Will you cross it?
