Reaching the Heart: God’s Story Through Our Story

Time: 20 Minutes | Key Text: Acts 2

Introduction: The Small Seed (4 Minutes)

The Context: Life Story Bible Church, today is our second gathering. It may feel small, but in God’s eyes, this is the planting of a people. Recap (Acts 1): Before the fire of Acts 2, there was the foundation of Acts 1:

A New Identity (v. 2): You are Apostles (sent ones).

A Certain Hope (v. 3): Grounded in His reality and convincing proofs.

A Required Dependency (v. 4): The command to wait for the Holy Spirit.

A Clear Focus (v. 8): Focused missionally while we wait.

The Installation: Pentecost was the installation of God’s source of power. Think of a mayor installing a city water system. Once the pipes are laid, every new home (every believer) simply connects to the source. The installation happened once at Pentecost; the blessing is ongoing for us today.

The Hook: Today, the waiting ends. Acts 2 is the birth of a church plant. We see ordinary people proclaiming an extraordinary Gospel.

I. The Presence of the Spirit (Acts 2:1-13) (5 Minutes)

Text: Acts 2:4-11

Timing: “Pentecost marked one of the three major feasts on Israel’s annual calendar. The name comes from its occurrence on the fiftieth (pentekoste) day after Passover. Jesus positioned the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for this day”

Pentecost is the feast of Harvest, Weeks, or First fruits now through the Sprit it will be the harvest of souls the first fruits of the church)

It could come only as a result of God’s previous work. Thus it was not simply about agriculture but about redemption as well. Israel offered her firstfruits to God, who saved her from slavery in Egypt. The underlying idea in the symbolism of Pentecost was that if God was able to redeem his people from Egypt, then he would be able to provide for their lives too, just as he had promised.

The Spirit (Ruach/Pneuma): Means "wind" or "breath."

Ezekiel 37:9–10 (ESV): "Prophesy to the breath... say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live."

The Filling (v. 4): We receive the Spirit at salvation (John 3:5-16), but the filling is an ongoing empowerment for service. At Pentecost, they were filled specifically for the work of proclamation. They spoke in "known dialects" so that people from "every nation under heaven" could hear the mighty works of God. A person filled with the Spirit may do a variety of activities, but all of them will magnify Jesus.”

Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

V4 What does this mean “They were Filled”

In most cases, to be “filled with the Holy Spirit” means to be empowered for service, usually that of proclamation or mission. This does not imply an initial lack but merely communicates a special experience of the Spirit in order to carry out the mission from Jerusalem and Judea to Samaria and the ends of the earth. The Spirit’s work in salvation does not take second place in Acts—reception of the Spirit is the primary reason Gentiles must be baptized and recognized as full-fledged members of the new covenant (15:8–9)—but at Pentecost specifically the disciples are filled with power for the great work of that day

The "Listen First" Principle:

The "Listen First" Principle: The disciples had to wait and listen for the Spirit’s timing. To reach our neighborhood, we must do the same.

B.L.E.S.S. Connection (Begin with Prayer & Listen):

Strategy (The Soul Detective): Ask questions about their story, pain, and joys.

QUESTION: Do you listen to the Spirit's guiding and the neighbor's heart to find the door to God’s Redemptive Story? We aren't just looking for an opening to talk; we are looking for a way to love.

II. The Priority of the Gospel (Acts 2:14-36) (5 Minutes)

Text: Acts 2:14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.

The Context: Peter "stood up... and raised his voice." This is bold engagement. The "No Judgment" Zone: Peter spoke to the very people who likely called for the crucifixion days earlier. His posture was the Gospel, not condemnation.

Grace Perspective: Remember—you are them without grace.

Meeting them in the "Tree":

Luke 19:5 (ESV): "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today." B.L.E.S.S. Connection (Eat & Serve): Find common ground. Like Peter, find the "hook" and tie your testimony into their story. If they are lonely, share how Jesus met you in your loneliness.

Peter uses what they know (the Prophets/Psalms) to explain what they don't (Jesus).

The Man (v. 22): The humanity of Christ.

The Plan (v. 23): The death of Christ (Divine perspective).

The Resurrection (vv. 24-32): God raised Him up.

The Messiah (vv. 33-36): Peter quotes Psalm 110:1 to show Jesus is Lord. Psalm 110:1 ("The LORD says to my lord: 'Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet'") is the most frequently quoted Old Testament verse in the New Testament. Quoted over 24 times specifically for V1

QUESTION: Do we have the same posture of Jesus? A Space that meets people where they are, then stands up to declare the truth?

III. The Pattern of Revival (Acts 2:37-41) (4 Minutes)

Acts 2:37–41 ESV

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Information without application is just a lecture. Peter concludes by telling the crowd exactly how to respond to the truth they just heard.

Conviction: The people were "cut to the heart." True preaching leads to a realization of need. As Jesus said in John 16:8, the Spirit convicts.

The Command: Repent and be baptized. It requires a change of mind (repentance) and a public identification with Christ (baptism).

The Harvest: 3,000 souls were added. This demonstrates that when the Spirit moves and the Word is preached, the result is multiplication.

B.L.E.S.S. Connection (Share your Story): 1 Peter 3:15 tells us to be ready to give a defense for our hope. Pentecost means every believer can know God truly and must make Him known faithfully.

Closing: Practical Application (2 Minutes)

The Foundation: This overflow happens because we are committed to our four focuses: people of Prayer (John 15:7), People of the Word (2 Tim 3:16-17), True Community (Heb 10:24-25), and Centered on Communion (1 Cor 11).

The 90-Day Vision: At Life Story Bible Church, we are setting a goal to connect with 200 families over the next 90 days. We do this by being a "Light" through the BLESS practices: Begin with Prayer, Listen, Eat, Serve, and Share your Story.

The Takeaway: Evangelism isn't winning an argument; it's listening to someone’s story and sharing how it fits into God’s grand redemptive story.

Final Charge: We are in early days, but these are defining days. Let's build on the right foundation.
