“Dead to Rules, Alive to Christ”

INTRODUCTION: The Tragedy of Living as Though We Never Died

The tragedy of much of modern Christianity is not rebellion—it is amnesia. We have forgotten that we died.

Paul does not begin this passage with a command, but with a declaration: “If you died with Christ…” That phrase is not symbolic language—it is spiritual reality. The cross was not just something Jesus did for us; it was something God did to us. When Christ died, you died. When He was buried, your old life was buried. When He rose, you rose into an entirely new realm of living.

Yet Paul confronts the church with a piercing question:

“Why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations?”

In other words: Why are resurrected people living like prisoners? Why are free sons acting like slaves? Why are those who have been seated with Christ still bowing to rules that never had the power to save them?

Religion always wants to rebuild what the cross demolished. The flesh feels safer with rules than with relationship. But rules promise control while delivering bondage.

Paul is not attacking holiness—he is attacking counterfeit holiness. He is exposing a system that looks spiritual but denies the power of Christ’s finished work.

This sermon is a call to step out of man-made restrictions and into Spirit-led transformation.

POINT 1: You Died With Christ—That Life Is Over

“If you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world…” (v.20)

The Christian life does not begin with self-improvement—it begins with execution.

You did not upgrade your old nature; it was crucified. You did not tame the flesh; it was buried. You were not reformed—you were replaced.

🔹 Real-Life Illustration: A man who has died is no longer bound by his debts, his schedule, or his former obligations. No creditor can knock on a grave and demand payment. In the same way, the world’s systems no longer have legal authority over someone who has died with Christ.

Colossians 3:3 – “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

🔥 Spirit-Filled Thought: You cannot live the resurrected life while clinging to the grave clothes of the old system.

POINT 2: Religion Rebuilds What the Cross Destroyed

“…why…do you subject yourselves to regulations?” (v.20)

The cross ended the reign of external control—but religion tries to resurrect it.

Religion says:

“Do this to be accepted.”

“Avoid that to be spiritual.”

“Measure yourself by appearances.”

But grace says:

“You are accepted—now live from it.”

“You are holy—now walk it out.”

“You are free—now follow the Spirit.”

🔹 Real-Life Illustration: It’s like someone tearing down a prison wall, opening the gates, and declaring freedom—only for people to carry bricks back and rebuild their own cells because captivity feels familiar.

🔥 Spirit-Filled Thought: The cross didn’t lower the bar of holiness—it removed the ladder of human effort.

POINT 3: “Do Not Touch” Is Fear-Based Holiness

“Do not touch…” (v.21)

Rules that begin with fear never produce righteousness.

Fear says, “If I touch the wrong thing, God will reject me.” Love says, “I walk in holiness because I belong to Him.”

Holiness is not achieved by avoidance—it is produced by affection.

🔹 Real-Life Illustration: A married man does not remain faithful because he has a long list of forbidden women—but because he loves his wife. Love governs him better than rules ever could.

🔥 Spirit-Filled Thought: The Spirit doesn’t restrain you with fear—He redirects you with love.

POINT 4: “Do Not Taste” Is External Control, Not Internal Change

“Do not taste…” (v.21)

Rules can control behavior but never transform the heart.

You can restrict appetite without renewing desire. You can modify habits without healing identity.

🔹 Real-Life Illustration: A sign that says “Wet Paint—Do Not Touch” may stop your hand, but it doesn’t change your curiosity. Only transformation removes the desire altogether.

🔥 Spirit-Filled Thought: True holiness flows from the inside out—not the outside in.

POINT 5: “Do Not Handle” Is the Illusion of Spirituality

“Do not handle…” (v.21)

Legalism loves extremes because they look spiritual.

But Paul says these things “perish with the using.” They have no eternal value. They do nothing for the soul.

🔹 Real-Life Illustration: Polishing a car with a dead engine may make it shine—but it still won’t take you anywhere. External rules polish appearances while leaving hearts powerless.

🔥 Spirit-Filled Thought: If it doesn’t produce life, it’s not from the Life-Giver.

POINT 6: Man-Made Doctrines Compete With Christ’s Lordship

“…according to the commandments and doctrines of men” (v.22)

Anything that replaces Christ as the source of righteousness becomes an idol—even if it sounds spiritual.

Rules that are not rooted in Christ subtly shift trust away from Him.

🔥 Spirit-Filled Thought: Christ didn’t die to become an accessory to your rulebook—He died to become your life.

POINT 7: The Spirit Leads Where Rules Never Can

The solution is not lawlessness—it is Lordship.

When Christ reigns within:

The Spirit convicts.

Grace empowers.

Love governs.

Holiness flows naturally.

CONCLUSION: Step Out of the Graveyard of Religion

Paul’s question still echoes today: Why live like you’re still in the world when you died with Christ?

Religion will keep you busy. Rules will keep you afraid. But Christ will make you alive.
