John 21:15-25: Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of

John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know

that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He

said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He *said to him, “Shepherd

My sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was

grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to

Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus *said to him,

“Tend My sheep.

Our Times Are in His Hand

18 “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and

walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your

hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to

go.”

19 Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And

when He had spoken this, He *said to him, “Follow Me!”

20 Peter, turning around, *saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the

one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who

is the one who betrays You?”

21 So Peter seeing him *said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?”

22 Jesus *said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You

follow Me!”

23 Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not

die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to

remain until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and

we know that his testimony is true.

25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they *were written

in detail, I suppose that even the world itself *would not contain the books that

*would be written.

 The net with fish, the boat, and other fishing gear were

present. Was Jesus asking Peter if he loved Jesus more

than fishing? MAYBE

o SLIDE As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee,

He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon,

casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17

And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make

you become fishers of men.” 18 Immediately they left

their nets and followed Him. -Mark 1:16-18

 SLIDE Option 2: More than you love the other disciples.

 Was Jesus asking Peter if he loved Jesus more than he

loved the other disciples? MAYBE

o SLIDE “He who loves father or mother more than Me

is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or

daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” -

Matthew 10:37

 SLIDE Option 3: More than the other disciples love Me.

 Was Jesus asking Peter if he loved Jesus more than the

other disciples loved Jesus? MAYBE

o SLIDE Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow

You right now? I will lay down my life for You.” 38

Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me?

Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until

you deny Me three times. -John 13:37-38

 I will lay down my life….not WE will lay down

our lives…

o SLIDE And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away,

because it is written, ‘I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD,

AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED.’ 28 “But after I have

been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 But

Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away, yet

I will not.” -Mark 14:27-29

 Even though these other losers will fall away, I

WILL NOT!!!

 SLIDE Option 4: It could be all three…

 Application:

o Do you love Jesus more than your job?

o Do you love Jesus more than you love other people?

o Do you pursue loving Jesus the most that you can?

SLIDE Love…Agape or Phileo

 There has been a lot of emphasis made on the words that Jesus and Peter use

for “Love”.

o The first two times Jesus asks Peter if he loves Him, Jesus uses the word

“Agape”

o But Peter responds, yes Lord, I “Phileo” you.

o The Third time Jesus asks, He uses the word “Phileo”, and Peter

responds a third time, Lord, you know all things; You know that I “Phileo”

You.

 There has been a bad idea put forth about what is going on here

because of the use of the different words.

 Some believe that Agape always means

divine/unconditional/ultimate love, while Phileo is used as

the feeling of natural love….

 So, the bad idea that gets taught is that Jesus asks Peter

twice if he has divine/ultimate love for Jesus, but Peter

responds by telling Jesus he only has natural…lesser love

for Him.

 Then, the third time, Jesus lowers his standards and asks

Peter if he just has Phileo for him….and that is why Peter is

grieved.

 Agape and Phielo are not used throughout John by these strict

definitions.



o SLIDE Agape and Phileo are being used as synonyms in this passage,

and John does this often for stylistic reasons.

 SLIDE Notice in our passage that John uses three other pairs of

words to convey the same idea….Lambs (arnia) and Sheep

(probata), Oida and Ginosko (for you KNOW), and also Tend

(bosko) and take care of (poimaino)

o SLIDE PETER IS NOT GRIVED BECAUSE OF THE

CHANGE OF WORD FOR “LOVE”. The text tells us

why Peter is grieved…

 Peter was grieved because He said to him the

third time, “Do you love Me?” -John 21:17

 SLIDE It was because He asked it a

third time, not because of the word

change.

 Also, it says that he was grieved

because Jesus said to him a third

time…do you PHILEO me….it’s being

used as a synonym for agape, since we

know Jesus didn’t ask Peter if he

Phielo’d Him three times.

 SLIDE Why does it grieve Peter that Jesus asked a third time?

 Do you ever have memories unlocked in your mind because of a certain smell or

taste, or because something feels a certain way to the touch?

o Whenever I smell the Davidoff Cool Water cologne, I am immediately

taken back to 8 th grade in my mind. I remember the Jr. high dances in the

Pine school cafeteria, I remember the girls I had crushes on, I remember

the basketball games, the rides on the bus with my team…. The smell jogs

my memory.

o I believe that this same phenomenon was happening to Peter in this

conversation with Jesus, and Peter remembered three times he denied

Jesus.

 Remember the setting of this discussion? We talked a little

about it last week.

o SLIDE But when the day was now breaking, Jesus

stood on the beach -John 21:4a

 Early in the morning.

o SLIDE So when they got out on the land, they saw a

charcoal fire already laid and fish placed on it, and

bread. -John 21:9

o SLIDE Now the slaves and the officers were standing

there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and

they were warming themselves; and Peter was also

with them, standing and warming himself. -John 18:18

o Not too long before Jesus asked these questions,

early on a Friday morning, Peter was standing around

another charcoal fire, and was asked three times if he

was a follower of Jesus, and he denied it.

o I think the early morning/charcoal fire/three times he was asked brought

up this awful memory.

 Remember though, after the Resurrection, Jesus had already met with Peter

alone (1 cor. 15:5), met with him twice in John 20 with the other disciples, and is

now with him again.

o I don’t think Peter was afraid of Jesus or thought that Jesus hated

him…remember he jumped out of the boat and swam to Jesus!

 SLIDE What Jesus is doing with these questions is reinstating Peter for ministry!

o Remember, this questioning is happening with other disciples present!

They heard Jesus reinstate Peter’s ministry and three times tell him to

“tend My Sheep”.

o SLIDE Notice Peter’s answers… “Yes Lord, you know that I love you”…

 Peter is no longer bragging or boasting about how much more loyal

he is and how he is more faithful than the other disciples.

 His answer is based on the fact that Jesus knows.

o Do you know that even in your worst failures, Jesus knows you deeply,

and knows what you believe?

 Do you know that Jesus sees the selfishness, the fear, the sin in

your life, but even through all of that, He still truly knows who you

are?

o Peter was done boasting about how great he was and what he could do

for Jesus, because he had seen his utter failure. Peter was now ready to

serve Jesus, the God who gives second chances.

 SLIDE Jesus commands to Peter Tend/feed my lambs, Shepherd my Sheep,

Tend/feed my sheep.

 The sheep are not Peter’s, they are Jesus’.

Application:

 Your ministry is not about you, it’s about Jesus and His mission.

o So often, pastors/teachers etc… fall into the trap of thinking it’s their church,

their ministry, their mission….WRONG.

o This is all about the good Shepherd.

o We are called to steward the ministry God gives us.

 Family, career, ministry…..all from God.

 SLIDE How are you doing at stewarding the ministry God has given you?

o If you think that you are doing an amazing job, and that you are God’s gift to

the church, and that even if all others fail, you will hold stead

fast….remember, this is who Peter was too. Prideful, arrogant, boastful, self

promoting…..and in order for God to use him, Peter needed to be humbled

first.

 It’s interesting that not all of the disciples were humbled in such an

extreme way as Peter…. I believe that if we humble ourselves, God will

use us where He best sees fit….because He knows us.

 SLIDE Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He

will exalt you. -James 4:10

 Are you stewarding the ministry/life God has given you humbly?

 SLIDE How are you doing at stewarding the ministry God has given you?

o For some of you, this may be a painful question because in the past, you

have failed the Lord spectacularly.

o Past sin scars us and the consequences of our pride and arrogance remind

us of our epic failures.

o If this is a painful question…remember that we worship a God who gives

second chances.

 Peter is being reinstated for ministry here because he had previously

denied Jesus!

 If you have failed, God wants to reinstate you.

 SLIDE Don’t let grief because of past failure keep you from how God

can use you in the future.

Vs. 18-23

o SLIDE Jesus then tells Peter that he will die as a martyr.

 There are a few different ideas about how Peter was martyred, but that

he was martyred is certain.

 SLIDE Peter, who because of unrighteous jealousy, not once or twice but

many times endured hardship and thus having given his testimony   he went to

the place of glory he deserved. -1 Clement 5:4 (96 AD)

o Peter had already been killed by the time John wrote this Gospel.

 Some believe Peter was crucified in Rome under Nero’s persecutions.

 Some believe he was burned alive by Nero.

 However Peter was killed for his faith, we know that he lived with this

prophecy of Jesus in his mind. He tells us this in 2 Peter 1:13-15

 SLIDE I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling,

to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the laying

aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus

Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at

any time after my departure you will be able to call these things

to mind. -2 Peter 1:13-15

 SLIDE “Follow Me”…

o Jesus is telling Peter to continue following Jesus, even with martyrdom

coming.

 SLIDE If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed,

because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 Make sure

that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a

troublesome meddler; 16 but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is

not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. -1 Peter 4:14-

16

o Jesus is probably also inviting Peter to take a walk on the beach with Him.

Vs. 22

 SLIDE What is that to you….you follow me.

o SLIDE Stop worrying about other people…You follow me.

o Huge application point here. Has God called everyone to the same things?

 Peter’s questions implies that he doesn’t think Jesus is being fair….

 Does Jesus call all of us to the same things?

 So often, we worry about what God has called other people to do,

instead of worrying about ourselves.

 This can go one of two ways….

o The people that God is doing tremendous things

through, and we feel inadequate because it seems

like God is using other people in amazing ways, and

here we are with our limited talent and impact.

o Or we think that we are doing all the work and others

are not pulling their weight….

 Who is more important…Peter or John??? NEITHER. They both

were used by the Lord to accomplish His mission.

 Our job is to Follow Jesus!

 John mentions a rumor that was spread about him, and that some took this to

mean that he wouldn’t die….but that isn’t what Jesus said.

Vs. 24-25

 John identifies himself as the author of this Gospel!

 Who is the “We”?

 Discuss the “team effortness” of the Gospel. Andrew, Philip, Thomas,

Nathanael are prominent disciples in John’s Gospel, but they aren’t in the

synoptics…..It’s possible they are the “we”.

Jesus, the incarnate Word of God, the Creator of the Universe…has done so many

other things throughout eternity, that there is literally not enough space to write about it,

even if the earth was filled with books!!!!

But, for all eternity, we will get to learn about, interact with, and KNOW Jesus

Christ…..Part of our eternal destiny will be to grow in understanding who our Creator is

more and more…What a wonderful future awaits those who have Believed in Jesus!

Aplicación:

¿Amas a Jesús más que a tu trabajo?

¿Amas a Jesús más de lo que amas a otras personas?

¿Te esfuerzas por amar a Jesús lo máximo posible?

DIAPOSITIVA: Amor… Ágape o Fileo

Se ha puesto mucho énfasis en las palabras que Jesús y Pedro usan para "Amor".

Las primeras dos veces que Jesús le pregunta a Pedro si lo ama, Jesús usa la palabra "Ágape".

Pero Pedro responde: sí Señor, yo te "Fileo".

La tercera vez que Jesús pregunta, usa la palabra "Fileo", y Pedro responde por tercera vez: Señor, tú lo sabes todo; Tú sabes que te "Fileo".

Se ha planteado una mala idea sobre lo que está sucediendo aquí debido al uso de estas diferentes palabras. Algunos creen que Ágape siempre significa amor divino/incondicional/supremo, mientras que Fileo se usa como el sentimiento de amor natural... Entonces, la mala idea que se enseña es que Jesús le pregunta a Pedro dos veces si tiene un amor divino/supremo por Jesús, pero Pedro responde diciéndole a Jesús que solo tiene un amor natural... un amor inferior por Él. Luego, la tercera vez, Jesús baja sus estándares y le pregunta a Pedro si solo tiene Fileo por él... y por eso Pedro se entristece.

Sin embargo, Ágape y Fileo no se usan con estas definiciones estrictas a lo largo de Juan.

DIAPOSITIVA: Ágape y Fileo se usan como sinónimos en este pasaje, y Juan hace esto a menudo por razones estilísticas.

Pedro se entristeció porque la tercera vez le dijo: «¿Me quieres?»

DIAPOSITIVA: Fue porque se lo preguntó una tercera vez, no por el cambio de palabra. Además, dice que se entristeció porque Jesús le dijo por tercera vez... ¿me FILEAS?... se está usando como sinónimo de ágape, ya que sabemos que Jesús no le preguntó a Pedro si lo "Fileaba" tres veces.

DIAPOSITIVA: ¿Por qué le entristece a Pedro que Jesús pregunte una tercera vez?

¿Alguna vez se han desbloqueado recuerdos en tu mente debido a un cierto olor o sabor, o porque algo se siente de cierta manera al tacto? Siempre que huelo la colonia Davidoff Cool Water, mi mente viaja inmediatamente al octavo grado. Recuerdo los bailes de la secundaria en la cafetería de la escuela Pine, recuerdo a las chicas que me gustaban, recuerdo los partidos de baloncesto, los viajes en autobús con mi equipo... El olor refresca mi memoria.

Creo que este mismo fenómeno le estaba sucediendo a Pedro en esta conversación con Jesús, y Pedro recordó las tres veces que negó a Jesús.

¿Recuerdas el escenario de esta discusión? Hablamos un poco sobre eso la semana pasada.

No mucho antes de que Jesús hiciera estas preguntas, temprano en un viernes por la mañana, Pedro estaba de pie alrededor de otro fuego de carbón, le preguntaron tres veces si era seguidor de Jesús, y lo negó. Creo que la madrugada / el fuego de carbón / las tres veces que le preguntaron, sacaron a la luz este terrible recuerdo.

Recuerden, sin embargo, que después de la Resurrección, Jesús ya se había reunido a solas con Pedro (1 Cor. 15:5), se reunió con él dos veces en Juan 20 con los otros discípulos, y ahora está con él nuevamente. ¡No creo que Pedro le tuviera miedo a Jesús o pensara que Jesús lo odiaba... recuerden que saltó de la barca y nadó hacia Jesús!

DIAPOSITIVA: ¡Lo que Jesús está haciendo con estas preguntas es restaurar a Pedro para el ministerio!

Recuerden, ¡este interrogatorio está sucediendo con otros discípulos presentes! Ellos escucharon a Jesús restaurar el ministerio de Pedro y decirle tres veces "Apacienta mis ovejas".

DIAPOSITIVA: Nota las respuestas de Pedro... "Sí Señor, tú sabes que te amo"...

Pedro ya no alardea ni se jacta de ser más leal y más fiel que los demás discípulos. Su respuesta se basa en el hecho de que Jesús lo sabe. ¿Sabes que incluso en tus peores fracasos, Jesús te conoce profundamente y sabe lo que crees? ¿Sabes que Jesús ve el egoísmo, el miedo y el pecado en tu vida, pero que a pesar de todo eso, Él todavía sabe realmente quién eres?

Pedro había terminado de jactarse de lo grandioso que era y de lo que podía hacer por Jesús, porque había visto su fracaso absoluto. Pedro ahora estaba listo para servir a Jesús, el Dios que da segundas oportunidades.

DIAPOSITIVA: Jesús le ordena a Pedro: Apacienta mis corderos, Pastorea mis ovejas, Apacienta mis ovejas.

Las ovejas no son de Pedro, son de Jesús.

Aplicación

Tu ministerio no se trata de ti, se trata de Jesús y Su misión.

Muy a menudo, los pastores/maestros, etc., caen en la trampa de pensar que es su iglesia, su ministerio, su misión... INCORRECTO. Esto se trata de todo el buen Pastor. Estamos llamados a ser administradores del ministerio que Dios nos da (Familia, carrera, ministerio... todo proviene de Dios).

DIAPOSITIVA: ¿Cómo te va administrando el ministerio que Dios te ha dado?

Si crees que estás haciendo un trabajo increíble, que eres el regalo de Dios para la iglesia, y que incluso si todos los demás fallan, tú te mantendrás firme... recuerda, así era Pedro también. Orgulloso, arrogante, jactancioso, auto-promotor... y para que Dios pudiera usarlo, Pedro necesitaba ser humillado primero. Es interesante que no todos los discípulos fueron humillados de una manera tan extrema como Pedro... Creo que si nos humillamos, Dios nos usará donde considere mejor... porque nos conoce.

¿Estás administrando el ministerio/la vida que Dios te ha dado con humildad?

Para algunos de ustedes, esta puede ser una pregunta dolorosa porque en el pasado le han fallado al Señor espectacularmente. El pecado pasado nos deja cicatrices y las consecuencias de nuestro orgullo y arrogancia nos recuerdan nuestros fracasos épicos. Si esta es una pregunta dolorosa... recuerda que adoramos a un Dios que da segundas oportunidades. ¡Pedro está siendo restaurado para el ministerio aquí porque previamente había negado a Jesús! Si has fallado, Dios quiere restaurarte.

DIAPOSITIVA: No permitas que el dolor por los fracasos pasados te aleje de cómo Dios puede usarte en el futuro.

DIAPOSITIVA: Jesús luego le dice a Pedro que morirá como mártir.

Hay algunas ideas diferentes sobre cómo Pedro fue martirizado, pero que fue martirizado es seguro.

DIAPOSITIVA: "Pedro, quien a causa de celos injustos, no una o dos veces sino muchas veces soportó dificultades y habiendo dado así su testimonio, fue al lugar de gloria que merecía." -1 Clemente 5:4 (96 d.C.)

Pedro ya había sido asesinado para cuando Juan escribió este Evangelio.

Algunos creen que Pedro fue crucificado en Roma bajo las persecuciones de Nerón.

Algunos creen que fue quemado vivo por Nerón.

Sin importar cómo fue asesinado por su fe, sabemos que vivió con esta profecía de Jesús en su mente. Él nos cuenta esto en 2 Pedro 1:13-15.

DIAPOSITIVA: "También considero justo, mientras esté en este cuerpo, estimularlos recordándoles estas cosas, sabiendo que mi separación del cuerpo terrenal es inminente, tal como me lo ha declarado nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Además, yo procuraré con diligencia, que en todo tiempo, después de mi partida, ustedes puedan recordar estas cosas.." -2 Pedro 1:13-15

DIAPOSITIVA: "Sígueme"…

Jesús le está diciendo a Pedro que continúe siguiendo a Jesús, incluso con el martirio que se avecinaba.

DIAPOSITIVA: "Si ustedes son insultados por el nombre de Cristo, dichosos son, pues el Espíritu de gloria y de Dios reposa sobre ustedes. Ciertamente, por ellos Él es blasfemado, pero por ustedes es glorificado. Que de ninguna manera sufra alguien de ustedes como asesino, o ladrón, o malhechor, o por entrometido. Pero si alguien sufre como cristiano, que no se avergüence, sino que como tal glorifique a Dios." -1 Pedro 4:14-16

Jesús probablemente también esté invitando a Pedro a dar un paseo por la playa con Él.

Versículo 22

DIAPOSITIVA: ¿A ti qué te importa? Tú sígueme.

DIAPOSITIVA: Deja de preocuparte por otras personas... Tú sígueme.

Enorme punto de aplicación aquí. ¿Ha llamado Dios a todos a las mismas cosas? Las preguntas de Pedro implican que no cree que Jesús esté siendo justo... ¿Nos llama Jesús a todos a las mismas cosas? Muy a menudo, nos preocupamos por lo que Dios ha llamado a otras personas a hacer, en lugar de preocuparnos por nosotros mismos.

Esto puede ir en una de dos direcciones:

Vemos a las personas a través de las cuales Dios está haciendo cosas tremendas, y nos sentimos inadecuados porque parece que Dios está usando a otras personas de maneras asombrosas, y aquí estamos nosotros con nuestro talento e impacto limitados.

O pensamos que estamos haciendo todo el trabajo y que otros no están poniendo de su parte...

¿Quién es más importante... Pedro o Juan? NINGUNO. Ambos fueron usados por el Señor para cumplir Su misión. ¡Nuestro trabajo es seguir a Jesús!

Juan menciona un rumor que se difundió sobre él, y que algunos tomaron esto en el sentido de que no moriría... pero eso no fue lo que dijo Jesús.

Versículos Juan 21:24-25

¡Juan se identifica a sí mismo como el autor de este Evangelio!

¿Quiénes son el "Nosotros"? Discute el "esfuerzo de equipo" del Evangelio. Andrés, Felipe, Tomás, Natanael son discípulos prominentes en el Evangelio de Juan, pero no lo son en los sinópticos... Es posible que ellos sean el "nosotros".

Jesús, la Palabra encarnada de Dios, el Creador del Universo... ha hecho tantas otras cosas a lo largo de la eternidad, ¡¡¡que literalmente no hay suficiente espacio para escribir sobre ello, incluso si la tierra se llenara de libros!!!

Pero, por toda la eternidad, podremos aprender, interactuar y CONOCER a Jesucristo... Parte de nuestro destino eterno será crecer en la comprensión de quién es nuestro Creador cada vez más... ¡Qué futuro tan maravilloso les espera a los que han creído en Jesús!
