Session 19: The Church Leadership Elders In Acts 20:17, Paul calls the elders together (πρεσβυτέρους presbyterous). In verse 28, he says God made you overseers (aka bishops) (ἐπισκόπους, episkopous). Also in verse 28 he says they are "to shepherd" (pastor) the church of God (ποιμαίνειν, verb form, poimainein). Aside from some very entrenched traditions, it seems clear that he is speaking to the same men, varying in qualification (elder--experience in the faith) and function (oversight, pastoring). Deacons Acts 6:1-8 Php 1:1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: 1 Ti 3:8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 1 Ti 3:10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 1 Ti 3:12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 1 Ti 3:13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
