Intro:

If Jesus walked into your life in some way;
and said
‘Follow me,’ what would you have to leave behind?”
What would you do?

Summary:

Jesus begins his public ministry in Galilee!
It marks the fulfillment of prophecy;
-As he brings light into darkness
-call His first disciples
-and demonstrates the power of the Kingdom through healing and teaching!

Galilee: Light Dawns

Matthew 4:12–17 CSB
12 When he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. 13 He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 15 Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 16 The people who live in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned. 17 From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
What does the passage say about the significance of Galilee in Jesus' ministry?
Isaiah 9:1–2 CSB
1 Nevertheless, the gloom of the distressed land will not be like that of the former times when he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali. But in the future he will bring honor to the way of the sea, to the land east of the Jordan, and to Galilee of the nations. 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness.
How does the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy relate to Jesus' identity as the light of the world?
How this passage could point to Christ: This theme reflects Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy:
-regarding the light coming into the world
-establishing Him as the ultimate source of hope and salvation for humanity
He embodies the Kingdom of God, which breaks in dramatically and brings restoration!
Matthew 4:12–17 CSB

Commentary:
This is not a call to salvation, this is a call to service!
Life Application:
God works where people recognize their need.
The kingdom doesn’t announce itself through power centers but arrives where spiritual hunger is greatest.
Where is God bringing light to darkness in your own life right now?
In what ways can we identify the areas of darkness in our lives where we need to invite Christ's light?

Call to Follow

Matthew 4:18–22 CSB
18 As he was walking along the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter), and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. 19 “Follow me,” he told them, “and I will make you fish for people.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father, preparing their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
What practical steps can you take this week to actively follow Jesus in your daily life?
Commentary:
Experience Jesus and nothing compares again!
The old stuff is a cosmic letdown!!!
Life Application:
Discipleship demands decisive action!
What are you holding onto that prevents wholehearted surrender? ??
Following Jesus isn’t a gradual transition—it’s a break with the old and an embrace of the new.

Kingdom Power Revealed

Matthew 4:23–25 CSB
23 Now Jesus began to go all over Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 Then the news about him spread throughout Syria. So they brought to him all those who were afflicted, those suffering from various diseases and intense pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralytics. And he healed them. 25 Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
How can you demonstrate Christ's power through both your words and actions in your community?
Commentary:
Jesus said, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” That’s our purpose and goal!
Life Application:
Your faith becomes credible when people witness both your teaching and your compassion. How are you demonstrating Christ’s power through both truth and action in your community!
Responding to the light of Christ transforms our lives and compels us to share His love and power with the world!
