Who do you talk with?

Jesus talked with many people at many different times.

Jesus talked with religious people.

John 3 reminds us that Jesus was willing to talk with people who knew the Scriptures but may not have had full understanding. Jesus was willing to challenge those who “sit in the pews”.

Jesus talked with “outsiders”.

These are those who don’t know the true Scriptures. These are on the outside looking in. John 4 remind us that Jesus’ mission was never just about one nationality, race, gender or group of people.

Jesus took the humble road.

As we open the chapter we notice that Jesus did not force his popularity. As one writer I read this week stated, Jesus took the low-road not forcing popularity but realizing when his greatest moment would be—on the cross.

Jews & Samaritans were not friends.

There was continually conflict between these two “nations”. Samaritans were “half jews” the remnant from the northern kingdom (10 tribes) who married with Persians. They only accepted the Pentateuch.

Jesus is fully human.

We cannot forget this part of who He is. Yes Jesus is God but he is also fully human.

Jesus allows others to serve him.

This is a great strategy as we look to interact with people. We all have needs. This woman had a need, as we find out, but Jesus is willing to start things by allowing her to serve him in some way. Yes there are cultural reasons for this but I think there is also a deeper reality.

Jesus sees our deeper needs.

Living water was the only water able to be used in ceremonially cleansing. Living water was used in the OT as a reminder of who God was and His provision. Living water Jesus would go on to indicate is the Holy Spirit (John 7).

Jesus can transform ALL our pain, trauma, despair, hopelessness and fears.

This woman was an “outsider” in many ways beyond just being a Samaritan. Jesus would not let any obstacle come in the way of her being able to choose a different way.

True worship is not a place but a person.

The woman tries to distract from her pain, so will others, but Jesus reminds who that true worship was never about a temple or a place but a person.

She left her jar behind.

After her interaction with Jesus what was important before is no longer as important. She goes and finds others saying, Come and see…

What do you need to leave behind?

What are you holding on to that Jesus wants you to leave behind for him.

The “I AM” is here!

The words of verse 26 is just that, “I Am”.
