1. Request for Location and Directions to God
1. Request for Location and Directions to God
If you need to get somewhere I hope you know where your going and how to get there. Thomas gets looked down on a little because he is associated with doubt and asking tough questions, but I like Thomas here because its the good questions that get good answers. Jesus just told the disciples that he was going to prepare a place for them and that they already knew how to get there. And confused, just like you would be, he raises an inquiry of eternal consequence and infinite value, “We don’t know where you are going and how can we know the way?”
The location is Glory.
In your quest for truth and understanding, or clarity, you must never stop asking questions. This is why the world is so messed up, because instead of humbling themselves to the wisdom of God and asking questions they lean into their own understanding and mess things up (Preach).
“How can we know the way?”
This is where the frustration comes as a teacher. Jesus is the way, and he has always been the way, and Thomas has been with the way for three years. And Tomas didn’t see the way because he wasn’t following the signs.
He turned water in to wine, He healed the Nobleman’s son. He healed the paralytic at Bethesda. He fed 5,0000. He walked on water. He raised Lazarus from the dead.
2. Revelation that Jesus is the Way to God
2. Revelation that Jesus is the Way to God
Jesus is the way, He is the Truth, and he is the Life. Jesus’s answer to Thomas’s question gives more than Thomas was expecting, but filled in all miscommunications between them. Way, Truth, Life.
Way-It means the road. More specifically the road you take to get to a specific place. I once debated a skeptic while in college who tried to be smart and say, “Texas is huge and there are many ways to Texas. God is bigger there must be may ways to God.” I said, “This is a big School but in order to get in you have to go through administration.”
Truth- Jesus is the Word made flesh. So the truth is more than just abstract knowledge, it is more than objective reality, it is the one who holds and keeps all existence by his word.
You don’t know the truth until you Know Jesus who is the Truth. You can have all the evidence and answers you want but there always some type of rebuttal to go back and forth in an argument. But for those of us who know Jesus who know the Truth, we have the greatest evidence. Testimony of the truth.
Life- He is the life and the one who controls it.
