Plan of Salvation
PUNCTILIAR - An action or event that occurs at a single, specific and momentary point in time, rather than over a duration.
Our belief and confession do not stop at the water’s edge.
When we are baptized, we do not have every thing figure out

REPENTANCE

Matthew 3:2 ESV
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Mark 1:4 ESV
John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Matthew 3:5–11 ESV
Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

PROCESS TO REPENTANCE

2 Corinthians 7:8–9 ESV
For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while. As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.
2 Corinthians 7:10 ESV
For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

1. Recognition that you have Sinned

2. Godly Sorrow about the Sin

David (2 Samuel 12)
2 Samuel 12:13 ESV
David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die.
David (2 Samuel 12)
Peter (Luke 22:61)
Saul (Acts 9)
Acts 9:11 ESV
And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying,
Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11)
God's Omniscience: It serves as a reminder that God cannot be fooled, and He knows the true intentions behind actions.
2 Corinthians 7:10 ESV
For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11)
Judas
Matthew 27:3–4 ESV
Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”
He was convicted, remorseful, sorrowful. But it was not Godly sorrow
Was there anything stopping Judas from repenting?
Was Judas operating in his own free will at this time?
Matthew 27:5 ESV
And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
2 Timothy 4:2 ESV
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
3 Common Misconceptions about Repentance
It is completely shameful to repent
It is something someone else needs to do
It is Punctiliar

I. It is completely shameful to repent

Shame has its place
Book of Isa use shame or shameful more 20 times
Jeremiah 6:15 ESV
Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time that I punish them, they shall be overthrown,” says the Lord.
Godly sorrow will make us ashamed
There is also a great deal of joy (Luke 15)
Lost coin, sheep, and son
Luke 15:7 ESV
Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
Luke 15:31–32 NKJV
“And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ”

II. It is something someone else needs to do.

Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We are great at giving others advise
“Humble Yourself in the Sight of the Lord”
James 4:8–10 ESV
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
James 4:4–6 ESV
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

III. Repentance is Punctiliar

Galatians 6:1 NKJV
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
Acts 3:19 ESV
Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
Romans 6:1–2 ESV
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
Romans 6:6 ESV
We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
Romans 6:12–14 ESV
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
1 John 1:8–10 ESV
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
1 John 2:1 ESV
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
