SCRIPTURE
14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him. 15 And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you. 16 Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. And it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well.” 17 So Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.” 18 Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.” 19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” 20 And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul. 21 So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer. 22 Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.” 23 And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.
BIG IDEA
Our spiritual condition and heart attitude set the atmosphere of every environment we enter—home, church, work, and beyond.
INTRODUCTION
Definition: atmosphere = the prevailing mood, tone, or spiritual climate in a place—felt before words are spoken.
Illustration: Walking into a tense room vs. a peaceful home—everyone senses it instantly.
Thesis: What’s in our heart doesn’t stay in our heart; it leaks out and shapes the atmosphere around us.
Today: Learn from Saul (toxic atmosphere) and David (life-giving atmosphere), then apply it through heartitude (heart attitude).
The Toxic Atmosphere – When the Spirit Departs (vv. 14–17)
Key Verse: “Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him.” (v. 14)
Saul’s disobedience grieved the Holy Spirit → Spirit departed.
Result: Inner torment → outer atmosphere poisoned
Irritability, fear, instability filled the palace.
Servants walked on eggshells; darkness permeated everything.
Main Point: What is in your heart eventually leaks into the atmosphere.
Modern examples:
bitter spouse → tense home;
anxious leader → fearful team;
offended Christian → heavy church service.
Transition: “But then someone entered carrying a different Spirit…”
The Life-Giving Atmosphere – When the Spirit Rests (vv. 18–23)
Key Verse: “…a son of Jesse… And the Lord is with him.” (v. 18)
David’s profile: Skilled, brave, articulate → but the decisive factor = “the Lord is with him.”
What David brought:
A worshipper’s heart (lyre + Spirit-filled music).
Humility (shepherd boy serving in the palace).
The tangible presence of God.
Result: “relief would come to Saul… the evil spirit would leave him” (v. 23).
Main Point: A pure heart releases life, regulates the climate, and repels darkness.
Transition: “So how do we become atmosphere-setters like David?”
Setting the Atmosphere – Five Practical Steps (Application)
Repent Quickly – Keep short accounts with God (Psalm 51:10). Unconfessed sin creates spiritual smog.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Worship Intentionally – Make praise your default response (in the car, home, quietly at work). Worship warfare shifts atmospheres.
Stay Spirit-Filled – Daily surrender (Eph. 5:18). Pray in the Spirit, feast on the Word.
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
Guard Your Heart – Filter inputs (Prov. 4:23). Garbage in = garbage out; worship in = worship out.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
Cultivate the Right Heartitude – Enter every room aware: “The Lord is with me.” Smile, encourage, speak life, pray silently.
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
Recap: Saul polluted; David purified. We choose daily which atmosphere we carry.
Personal challenge:
Homes → worship & forgiveness
Church → come ready to worship, not critique
Work → be the peace-bringer
Heart → check your own atmosphere first
CALL TO ACTION
CALL TO ACTION
Altar invitation: “If your heartitude needs resetting today—come. Ask God for a fresh filling so you can set Kingdom atmospheres everywhere you go.”
Closing prayer: Clean hearts, fresh filling, atmosphere-shifting lives.
Benediction: “The Lord is with you. Go set the atmosphere for His glory!”
NOTES
NOTES
What is an atmosphere? One definition of the atmosphere is the blanket of gases that surrounds a planet. Here on earth, the atmosphere is the air surrounding us that extends to outer space that provides air to breathe, regulates temperature, drives weather patterns and protects life from harmful solar radiation.
Key Functions:
Provides Breathable Air: Contains essential oxygen and nitrogen for living things.
Regulates Temperature: Traps heat, keeping Earth warm enough for life and preventing extreme temperature swings.
Protects from Space: Blocks harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and shields from meteors.
Drives Weather: Contains water vapor and dust, creating clouds and weather patterns.
But the word atmosphere can also be applied to the tone or mood of a place or situation. How a place or situation makes you feel. The vibe.
Peace versus tension
Faith versus fear
Joy versus stress
Some people drain the room spiritually and emotionally
Atmosphere follows what a person consistently hosts on the inside.
What’s in your heart eventually leaks into the atmosphere.
Godly practices shift the atmosphere of a home.
The atmosphere surrounding Saul versus David.
The Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul
Saul had a troubling spirit from the Lord because of his disobedience
The Spirit of the Lord came upon David.
God withdraws His hand and allows evil to come. God is not the source of evil.
The Spirit of the Lord departed and then a distressing spirit entered.
The power of music and to set an atmosphere of worship.
When David played (worshipped) the distressing spirit would depart
God inhabits our praises.
Demons flee.
