The first of four gospel accounts in the New Testament, likely written for a Jewish audience, that portrays Jesus as the Messiah who fulfills Old Testament prophecy.

Whenever we use the term Gospels, we must recall that before the Gospels came the gospel, the good news concerning Jesus Christ—His life, death for sins, and resurrection (see ). Jesus preached good news (the gospel) when He began His work (, ).
