We know nothing of Malachi apart from the Book named after the Prophet.
His name means, “My message.” Because of the names meaning some scholars suggest that the word Malachi was a title other than a name.
Malachi, Ezra, and Nehemiah all refer to the same conditions.
Malachi 3:1 NKJV
1 “Behold, I send My messenger, And he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” Says the Lord of hosts.
John 1:6 NKJV
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
Malachi listed the cause
Nehemiah listed the effect.
Thus, it is likely that Nehemiah came before Malachi. Although Malachi is largely accepted top be the lost prophetic writing, there is no definitive proof of this timeline.

Characteristics:

A timeline of the events leading up to Malachi.
515 The temple was finished
458 Ezra goes to Jerusalem
445 Nehemiah goes to Jerusalem
The spirit of the age.
Malachi 1:2 NKJV
2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord. “Yet Jacob I have loved;
Malachi 1:6 NKJV
6 “A son honors his father, And a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence? Says the Lord of hosts To you priests who despise My name. Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’
Malachi 1:7 NKJV
7 “You offer defiled food on My altar, But say, ‘In what way have we defiled You?’ By saying, ‘The table of the Lord is contemptible.’
Malachi 2:17 NKJV
17 You have wearied the Lord with your words; “Yet you say, “In what way have we wearied Him?” In that you say, “Everyone who does evil Is good in the sight of the Lord, And He delights in them,” Or, “Where is the God of justice?”
Malachi 3:7 NKJV
7 Yet from the days of your fathers You have gone away from My ordinances And have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” Says the Lord of hosts. “But you said, ‘In what way shall we return?’
Malachi 3:8 NKJV
8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.
Malachi 3:13 NKJV
13 “Your words have been harsh against Me,” Says the Lord, Yet you say, ‘What have we spoken against You?’
The people question every utterance of the prophet and as a result, they will not hear another prophetic inspired word for 400 years.

I. Foundational Affirmation

God’s Word Mal 1.2
Malachi 1:2 NKJV
2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord. “Yet Jacob I have loved;
Skeptics question Mal 1.2
Malachi 1:2 NKJV
2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord. “Yet Jacob I have loved;
God’s Answer Mal 1.2-5
Malachi 1:2–5 NKJV
2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord. “Yet Jacob I have loved; 3 But Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness.” 4 Even though Edom has said, “We have been impoverished, But we will return and build the desolate places,” Thus says the Lord of hosts: “They may build, but I will throw down; They shall be called the Territory of Wickedness, And the people against whom the Lord will have indignation forever. 5 Your eyes shall see, And you shall say, ‘The Lord is magnified beyond the border of Israel.’

II. Formal Accusation

1:6-2:9 Accusation against the priest
2:10-2:16 Accusation against the people
2:17 Accusation against everyone

III. Final Annunciations

3 The Coming One
4:1-3 The Coming Day
4:4-6 The Closing Word

Message:

Concerning God - Consistent in divine love.
Concerning man - Failure of all motives, other than love.
Concerning a remnant -
Their value was in the name of God
Their occupation was to be fellowship
Their hope was in the coming one.

Application:

Perhaps no other prophets message was more relatable to our society and shape of Christianity than Malachi.

Of God

The constancy in love
The Consciousness of love
The courage of love

Of Man

The failure of all other motives, except love
The death of love always issuing in callousness
The worthlessness of form without power
Yet, Malachi’s picture best fits Christianity, (not the church, for only God knows His church) for these are the people that have an external connection to the church, but do not know the power of God.
Malachi 4 NKJV
1 “For behold, the day is coming, Burning like an oven, And all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble. And the day which is coming shall burn them up,” Says the Lord of hosts, “That will leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves. 3 You shall trample the wicked, For they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet On the day that I do this,” Says the Lord of hosts. 4 “Remember the Law of Moses, My servant, Which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, With the statutes and judgments. 5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 6 And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”
1 Thessalonians 1:9 NKJV
9 For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,
