David’s final instructions to Solomon centered on three matters:

punishing Joab for his role in murdering Abner and Amasa,

Regarding the specific individuals, David reminded Solomon of Joab’s murders of the two army commanders, emphasizing that these killings occurred during peacetime as acts of vengeance for wartime deaths2. Solomon was instructed to ensure Joab would not die naturally

rewarding the sons of Barzillai of Gilead for their support during his exile,

and ensuring Shimei faced consequences for cursing him1.

. For Shimei, David acknowledged that he had sworn an oath not to execute him when they met at the Jordan River, yet2 he instructed Solomon not to leave Shimei unpunished and to ensure his death2.
