1. The Problem Introduced

The Lord will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them. 26 Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since.

CHURCH FAMILY……

I REMEMBER BEING AROUND THIS FAMILY I GREW UP WITH…..NOT SOMETHING I HEARD ABOUT, BUT SOMETHING I WATCHED UP CLOSE.

FROM THE OUTSIDE, THEY LOOKED SOLID.

THEY SHOWED UP TOGETHER. SUPPORTED EACH OTHER. THE KIND OF FAMILY YOU’D LOOK AT AND SAY,

“THAT IS A LOVING FAMILY.”

BUT OVER TIME… SOMETHING STARTED TO FEEL DIFFERENT.

NOT LOUD. NOT DRAMATIC. JUST… DIFFERENT.

YOU’D BE AROUND THEM AND NOTICE LITTLE THINGS.

CONVERSATIONS DIDN’T FLOW THE SAME. THERE WAS A TENSION THAT WOULD COME AND GO. MOMENTS THAT USED TO FEEL EASY… STARTED FEELING A LITTLE FORCED.

AND NOBODY WAS SAYING ANYTHING.

THAT’S WHAT MADE IT HEAVY.

NO ARGUMENTS OUT IN THE OPEN. NO BIG BLOW-UPS.

JUST… A QUIET SHIFT.

SO THEY TRIED TO FIX IT THE WAY WE DO.

“LET’S SPEND MORE TIME TOGETHER.” “LET’S TALK MORE.”

AND THEY MEANT WELL.

BUT IT STILL WASN’T RIGHT.

BECAUSE WHAT WAS OFF… WASN’T ON THE SURFACE.

IT WAS DEEPER THAN THAT.

COME TO FIND OUT… ONE PERSON IN THE FAMILY HAD BEEN DEALING WITH SOMETHING PRIVATELY.

FINANCIAL PRESSURE.

TRYING TO HOLD THINGS TOGETHER… BUT FALLING BEHIND.

NOT SAYING ANYTHING…

BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T WANT TO WORRY ANYBODY. MAKING DECISIONS QUIETLY… TRYING TO FIX IT ON THEIR OWN.

AND OVER TIME… IT STARTED SHOWING UP.

STRESS TURNED INTO SHORT CONVERSATIONS.

PRESSURE TURNED INTO DISTANCE.

SILENCE TURNED INTO MISUNDERSTANDING.

AND WHAT NOBODY REALIZED AT FIRST WAS THIS:

IT WASN’T THAT THE FAMILY WAS FALLING APART…

IT WAS THAT SOMETHING HIDDEN…

WAS QUIETLY AFFECTING EVERYTHING.

AND THE LONGER IT STAYED HIDDEN… THE MORE IT SHAPED WHAT EVERYBODY FELT EVEN IF THEY COULDN’T EXPLAIN IT.

AND CHURCH… THAT’S EXACTLY WHERE JOSHUA CHAPTER 7 MEETS US.

BECAUSE EVERYTHING LOOKED LIKE IT WAS WORKING…

UNTIL IT WASN’T.

JOSHUA CHAPTER 6 ENDS ON A HIGH NOTE.

THE WALL FELL DOWN.

VICTORY IS CLEAR.

CONFIDENCE IS STRONG.

BUT JOSHUA CHAPTER 7 OPENS WITH A DIFFERENT TONE:

“BUT THE ISRAELITES WERE UNFAITHFUL…”

NO WARNING.

JUST A SHIFT.

AND THAT SHIFT MATTERS.

BECAUSE NOTHING ON THE OUTSIDE HAD CHANGED.

THE LAND WAS STILL THERE.

THE PROMISE WAS STILL INTACT.

THE PEOPLE WERE STILL MOVING FORWARD.

BUT SOMETHING HAD CHANGED INTERNALLY.

AND THAT’S WHAT MAKES THIS PASSAGE DIFFICULT AND NECESSARY.

CULTURAL CONNECTION

WE LIVE IN A TIME WHERE WE ARE QUICK TO LOOK OUTWARD WHEN THINGS GO WRONG.

WE LOOK AT CIRCUMSTANCES.

WE LOOK AT WHAT’S AGAINST US.

AND SOMETIMES THOSE THINGS ARE REAL.

BUT THIS TEXT PRESSES US TO CONSIDER SOMETHING DEEPER:

SOMETIMES THE ISSUE IS NOT EXTERNAL RESISTANCE.

SOMETIMES THE ISSUE IS INTERNAL.

AND THAT’S NOT EASY TO TALK ABOUT.

BECAUSE INTERNAL ISSUES REQUIRE HONESTY.

AND HONESTY REQUIRES HUMILITY.

Joshua 7:6–9 NIV

6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! 8 Pardon your servant, Lord. What can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? 9 The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?”

You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them. 14 “ ‘In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man. 15 Whoever is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’ ” 16 Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was chosen. 17 The clans of Judah came forward, and the Zerahites were chosen. He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was chosen. 18 Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was chosen.

NOT OVERNIGHT… BUT DIRECTIONALLY.

CONVERSATIONS BECAME REAL AGAIN. TRUST STARTED BEING REBUILT. THE WEIGHT THAT ONE PERSON WAS CARRYING ALONE… WAS NO LONGER CARRIED ALONE.

AND THE FAMILY DIDN’T FALL APART…

THEY ACTUALLY BECAME STRONGER— BECAUSE WHAT WAS HIDDEN WAS FINALLY BROUGHT INTO THE LIGHT.

PASTORAL PRAYER

FAITHFUL AND KNOWING GOD,

WE COME BEFORE YOU TODAY WITH OPEN HEARTS.

NOT JUST THE PARTS OF US THAT ARE EASY TO SHARE… BUT EVEN THE PARTS WE TEND TO HOLD BACK.

LORD, YOU KNOW THE WEIGHT WE CARRY.
