“Because He Lives, Everything Changes”

John 20:1–18

Introduction: What If It’s Actually True?

There are some things that, if they’re true, change everything.
If a fire alarm goes off and it’s real — you don’t sit still. If a coach says you made the team — your future changes. If a doctor says, “You’re healed” — everything shifts.
Now here’s the question of Christianity:
What if the resurrection is actually true?
Not inspiring. Not symbolic. Not a metaphor.
What if Jesus of Nazareth physically walked out of the tomb?
Because if He did — everything changes.
John 20 isn’t just telling us something amazing happened.
It’s showing us what changes when you believe it.

Point 1: If the Resurrection Is True, Fear Is Not Final

(John 20:1–10)
Mary comes to the tomb while it is still dark.
That’s more than a time of day. That’s the emotional state.
She sees the stone rolled away and assumes the worst.
“They have taken the Lord.”
Her fear interprets reality.
Peter and John run to the tomb. They see the linen cloths. The burial cloths are folded.
This doesn’t look like grave robbers. This looks intentional.
John says he “saw and believed.”
Something is shifting.
Here’s the big idea:
If Jesus is still dead, fear makes sense.
If Jesus rose, fear is not final.
Students, think about this:
If death has been defeated, what’s the worst thing that can happen to you?
If the grave didn’t hold Jesus, it will not hold His people.
R.C. Sproul said:
“The resurrection is God’s public declaration that the work of Christ was accepted.”
That means sin was actually paid for.
That means your failures are not the end of your story.
Pastoral Transition: So when anxiety feels loud… when shame feels heavy… the resurrection says: this is not ultimate. This is not final.

Point 2: If the Resurrection Is True, Jesus Is Alive — Not Just Remembered

(John 20:11–16)
Mary is weeping.
She sees angels. She sees Jesus. But she doesn’t recognize Him.
Until He says one word:
“Mary.”
And everything changes.
Christianity is not about keeping the memory of a dead hero alive.
It is about being known by a living Savior.
Herman Bavinck said:
“The resurrection is the declaration that Christ is not only Savior in possibility but in power.”
He is not a past tense Savior.
He is alive.
And that means prayer is real. That means worship is real. That means you are not talking to the ceiling when you pray.
In The Lion King, Simba hears, “Remember who you are,” and it changes his direction.
Mary hears her name — and her entire world shifts.
Pastoral Transition: Students, if Jesus is alive, you are not alone in your struggle. You are not unseen. You are known.
And believing that changes how you wake up tomorrow.

Point 3: If the Resurrection Is True, Your Identity and Future Are Secure

(John 20:17–18)
Jesus says something incredible:
“I am ascending to my Father and your Father.”
That sentence only works if the resurrection is real.
Because He lives, His Father becomes your Father.
That is adoption language.
If Jesus stayed dead:
There is no victory.
There is no assurance.
There is no eternal life.
Christianity collapses.
But if He rose:
The cross worked.
You are forgiven.
You are adopted.
Death is defeated.
Tim Keller wrote:
“If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that He said.”
You don’t get to reduce Him to a good moral teacher.
If He walked out of the grave, He is King.
In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, when help comes at dawn, the entire battle changes direction.
The resurrection is the ultimate dawn.
Except this isn’t fantasy.
Michael Horton says:
“The empty tomb is not an inspiring symbol; it is a historical invasion of the new creation into this world.”
That means new creation has already begun.
Your future is not uncertain chaos.
It is resurrection life.

Why Believing Changes Everything (Bring It Home)

Let’s make this very personal.
If the resurrection is not true:
Your faith is just positive thinking.
Sin still owns you.
Death wins.
But if it is true:
You are forgiven.
You are adopted.
You are secure.
Your future is eternal life.
Your suffering is temporary.
Your sin does not define you.
Believing in the resurrection changes:
Your fear. Your identity. Your future. Your purpose.
Mary walked to the tomb weeping.
She ran back announcing:
“I have seen the Lord.”
That’s what belief does.
It turns mourners into messengers.
